    Graphics Tablets

    Hi,

I am looking at buying a Graphics Tablet next near and I am just looking at the possible options. The Wacom Intuos 3 Tablets seem to be very high qulity, as well as being packed with features. Is there anyone who has used on of these or can recomend anything better I am open to suggestions.

    Thanks

    RC.

My Dad's got an Intuos 2 (a4 oversize) and it's the dog's danglies, so I can only imagine the Intuos3 with double the sensitivity and added features is better!

How long has he had it for? I am just curious to how reliable they are.

2-3 years. He's a professional illustrator so he uses it all day everyday- and it's still working fine. Never had any problems with it.

I've been using the A4 oversized Wacom tablet for 6-7 years. I've polished the plastic on the front edge and there a couple of hailine cracks. The pen is good too and I have not needed to use any of the nibs (pen tip) replacements. Reliable and durable I would say yes. Good for RTS games and Baldur's Gate style RPG's as well as graphics work.

Minimum practical size is A5 similar to a mousemat and this is a nice size for everyday use. A4 oversized and you have to make quite big arm movements but you can map smaller areas.

People will take the pen off of you and try write with it.

Pens are nice to use on Pocket PC or Palm screens saves fiddling to remove the palm stylus.

Id only buy a Wacom if your serious about wanting to get into drawing on a pc, their serious money for what they are. If your just curious as to what their like and not sure weather you would carry on using it later down the line then i would go for a Nisis tablet like i have, the A4 version is around 60-70 quid. If you get into it properly then you could upgrade to a wacom later on. You should generally get one that’s a similar size to your screen. That way you can add more detail without needing to zoom. Their a real pain in the arse when you run out of room. The downside though is that the bigger they are the more desk space they take up. Personally i still prefer a mouse to navigate around windows, but if you get a pen and master it your illustrations will be 100% better. There's simply no comparison between using a mouse and a pen when it comes to making digital art work.

IMHO you can't get better than the medion A4 graphics tablet from Aldi I got mine for £29.99 and I see they are available again for £24.99.At that sort of price its a nobrainer. They work fine do what it says on the tin have a clear overlay sheet so you can trace aswell.
