    Best card for £200??

    Hey folks, merry xmas.
A mate of mine wants to upgrade his gfx card and has 200 burning a hole. I recommended he wait for the X800xl's to arrive but he wants it now. His current gfx card is an ATI 9600pro and resides in a Shuttle SN45G, so 2 slot cards are out (altho I dont think there are many that are in that price range). What do you guys recommend??

6800 non ultra. Try and find the XFX dual dvi edition or the galaxy one with the prefitted arctic cooler if you can.

alternatively get the £235 6800gt BFG card off pcworldcomponentcentre.

i got my gainward 6800le for £130 and that is damn fine, working at 12x1 6vp with artic cooler, i havent got round to overclocking it yet

but ram is good to 450mhz/900mhz (2.2ns)

so it works at vanilla speeds which cost around £180 +
i agree the BFG 6800gt sounds sweet!
However y not a 6600gt for £150 and save ur mate £50??? they are decent enough, should keep quite cool in a shuttle! is ur mate a hardcore gamer? what does he use his pc for?

Thanks for the suggestions. The PC is mainly used for playing Star Wars Galaxies and HL2. I suspect it will end up being either a vanilla 6800 or a 6600GT (it wont be an Intel i740 as davidstone suggested).

From what I've read, they seem to be neck-and-neck. In favour of the 6800 is the possibility of opening up the 4 disabled pipes, but the 6600gt is 30 quid cheaper...

I went for the cheaper option Call me a pessimist, but i'd rather save myself some money than hold out on the chance of a softmod. I haven't exactly had good luck with softmods in the past (a 9500 that wouldn't softmod, and a 9800se AiW that wouldn't softmod), just call me unlucky

Either would be an improvement on my G400 though

From what I've read, the 6800LE and 6600GT seem to be neck-and-neck. The 6800, from all the information I've seen on the net, seems to be a fair bit faster than the 6600GT - enough to justify the higher price.

not everyone buys a £200 card just for HL2 though, specially when you've nearly completed it on a 5600
