Wouldn't say it is overkill, if you have a text issue, then get a smaller second screen (reddit while playing games right?)

I think that's a good combo
Think about it like this - You'd rather have "too many" FPS than not enough
The GTX980TI is probably going to look rather poor value for money once the new cards hit in the latter part of next year IMHO. I would have got a R9 390 or GTX970 TBH.
The next generation cards are just going to better at running DX12 games too IMHO,and I see the GTX980TI being worth between £200 to £250 by the end of next year once the new cards drop.
We are almost at the end of 28NM too,and remember people might think the current top end card is invincible - 9/10 at a node shrink you soon find the midrange cards matching it.

I'm waiting on my 165hz ips gsync screen and am having to buy a card would it be better to splash out now on a 980ti or would a 970 and saving some money towards the new cards later in the year be better?
I dont mind playing on medium setting etc as I've been playing games on the minimum for years.
Definitely not overkill! 1440p is actually quite gpu intensive as I have recently found out! Upgraded from a r9 270 to a r9 380x and it's night and day.
However, having said that there's definitely times when I'm unable to have all the settings as high as I would like so a 980ti sounds perfect!
Well while the thread has been semi-necro'd, thought I'd update. It is a little bit overkill, since I don't tend to buy bleeding edge games right away (can't justify £40+ for the sake of waiting a few months). But it's nice to know that there's a huge library of titles that will run beautifully for many years to come.
I've been through the second half of GTAV with absolutely everything pushed to ridiculous and it barely broke a sweat. Got AC:Syndicate with the GPU and Just Cause 3 with a CPU upgrade and I think they might both struggle at full whack on a 970 1440p as there were occasional dips in framerate on both.
Anyway, pleased with my decision to go for the card I did, I've been on the Red Team since my Riva TNT2 died.
Nice one, and yes - AC on my 970 (at 1080p) struggles a bit, which is hugely frustrating when the nvidia effects make such a huge difference to how the game looks. If I had known, I may have done likewise and spent more on the GPU.
nah 980Ti is not over-kill on 1080p at all.
Have you considered GTX 970 SLI?
I'm seriously considering that route when I move to a 32" 2560x1440 in the next week or two, hopefully. (Darn prices went up just as I was going to buy a week or two ago.) GTX 970 SLI is on par and exceeds in most cases the power of a 980Ti and if, like in my case, you already have a 970.....a damn sight cheaper too!
Too much new shiny stuff always around, tempting me...
I did buy a 25" 1440 in the end, in most cases I'm yet to see a difference. AC is so poorly optimised that the settings are basically the same for a similar performance. Far cry 4 runs at 45-60 fps on high, as apposed to ultra high (it did used to stay at 60 fps tho). BF4 took a hit, which is a shame. But it's not like the 970 suddenly sucks ass luckily
Also, the extra screen space for documents and web pages is delicious!
I did consider 970 SLI, but when I finally come to upgrade I'll probably go for the next £300 price point card in a couple of generations time, if I need to.
Know what? I am really glad you replied. I am in the same situation as you were prior to your monitor upgrade. I'm not willing to go the 980Ti route as it's just too much money for an upgrade from the 970, so was looking at the 970 SLI route. As you say, the 970 isn't suddenly gonna suck big time just because of a hike in resolution and looking at the numbers you have posted yes, there is a drop in fps but not huge and it's not as if the games become stutter-fests.
Thanks for replying as your post helped me to just do the upgrade keeping the 970 and drop some settings if needed and like you, wait for the next mid-range cards, which will hopefully support Ultra settings at 1440p.
No it should be fine, but you could go for the 390X.
I would argue a 980ti would be ideal card for 1440p max (or close to max) settings on most modern games at 60fps. The value proposition, however, isn't too great. If rumors are true, Nvidia should come out with their Pascal cards in June in timing with computex. AMD will also show their offerings around the same time but they've made it abundantly clear that they're aiming for the "mainstream" market. for your use case, I would wait until the pascal/polaris benches hit before pulling the trigger
At the this point in time 980ti is the sweet spot for a Res of 1440p
I was on the fence 6 months ago, almost held off but I'm glad I've had 6 months of stunning visuals and high FPS. I wouldn't get a 980Ti today unless it was a bonkers good deal.
I'm planning on running it another 6 or so months then palm it off to the Mrs and get a newer card once the dust has settled on Pascal/Polaris
