    Is freesync worth it?

I've ordered 2 monitors and both are 144hz with freesync

I was planning on getting a 1070 when its out but now I was considering a used Fury or Fury X so I can use Freesync and make the most of the monitor.

But....is it worth ditching the cheaper high performing nvidia card and going to a second hand AMD card to use Freesync? Most the posts online are about selling old nvidia cards to get a newer amd and to use Freesync but that doesn't help me when I'm starting from scratch!

Not worth making a big decision for on graphics card IMHO - if you have the performance then a very high refresh rate is almost as good as -sync. However in your case I'd consider waiting for Vega, which might mean getting a second hand card as a stop gap knowing that by doing so you won't have as bad a depreciation as per a new card.

    Thanks.

I might look at getting a second hand 390x or 980 for now then.

    Re: Is freesync worth it?

With a 1070? Unless you are super serious about your gaming I wouldn't expect it to make a noticeable difference. Turn on vsync, and you don't get tearing. With a 60Hz monitor that adds quite a bit of latency, but at 144Hz you are always just a few ms from the next frame so it matters a whole lot less.

Freesync helps smooth the game at low frame rates too, which helps with something like the wife's 260X but can't see it being important with a high end card.

You might have sussed this but just in case: Freesync requires DP connectors so don't go lower than a 390 as you will only get one displayport socket (and even then best check before you buy).

    Re: Is freesync worth it?

FreeSync has a major cost advantage over most G-Sync enabled monitors and is much closer in price to higher refresh rate ones which lack either technology.

What is your current card?? If you are looking at a stop gap, then probably look at a RX480 for under £200 IMHO.

I don't have a card at the minute. All of my parts are due Friday so will need a card while I wait for my final card if I do not go for nvidia

However, if it's not really worth it I'd go with the 1070 which I believe is out next weekend!

The Founders Edition is being released on the 10th and if you go by the GTX1080 release, all of the 3rd part cards are on pre-order still. Remember the Founders Edition starts at $449 instead of $379,so that is that is at least £360,probably more here.

The AMD CEO was on record saying BOTH reviews and availability of the RX480 will be on the 29th of June.

If you have to be buying new components and you can line it all up then yes it's worth it. It's definitely cool but don't go too far out of your way.

    Re: Is freesync worth it?

I'd definitely say it's a major upgrade on v-sync, but if I had a monitor with a res and refresh rate I'm happy with, I wouldn't feel the need to replace it. That said, AMD cards just aren't nearly as high performing, I wouldn't want to compromise there. I'm told G-sync is the best option though of course also the most expensive one. Basically, I'd stick to nvidia and look into gsync monitors down the line, maybe when they offer more than 2 input ports max.

Even with a Titan X*, I can see the difference with Gsync enabled... and if it's something you can physically see, then I'd say it's worth at least considering.

    Re: Is freesync worth it?

I suspect it's handy if your graphics card cannot match the refresh rate of your monitor and it fluctuates from game-to-game. More useful on higher-resolution screens.

I can only get 72Hz out of my monitor and I tend to only accept that as a minimum in games - adaptive v-sync seems to work fine in my situation.
