how long would tht card last me? to play games on a semi-decent scale?
It depends on the game and your preferences. The newer the game the more likely you will have to compromise on the resolution and the quality. Fortunately developers know that alot of people don't have the high end graphics cards and they make every effort to make games playable mid range hardware that most people have. It should last you a while and when it's no longer so good for new releases you can still enjoy fantastic gameplay with budget releases and special GOTY editions.
My own preference is to play older games on max settings which does away with any concerns over the hardware. Just enjoy the games that will run well and don't believe all the hype over new releases. I get to play most things eventually and I strongly recommend you always try the demo first.
Bad choice. You would have been better picking up a second hand 9800, or even a 9500.
Maybe not the best choice but certainly by no means a bad choice considering you had a FX5200. Always worth asking on Hexus before buying hardware IMO and 256mb is more marketing than anything so 128mb 9800 card is preferable. Not to worry plenty of good games.
well i wanted to spend under about 80 quid on a card tht was better then a fx5200 so i can play cs:s better and other games till the SLI mobos have been out for a wile and come down in price =)
btw how much would a fx5200 sell for? roughly second hand
£20 ish
GA-7N400 Pro2
XP 2800+
2 X 512MB Kingston PC3200 ram
Nvidia 6600GT
On my 9600 Pro I can run Farcry in 1024x768 and most detail settings set to high, Doom 3 I can run in 800x600 and high detail (Havnt had a chance to test HL2 and Vampire Bloodlines on it yet as the card is in for repair) My current FX 5700 LE runs HL2 pretty damned good so when I get my Rad back it should be even better.
Having a gig of ram in the system helps alot with the detail settings and resolutions in most the games now I have found.
Like said previously though, its great to go back to some older games and run them in higher resolutions (Mafia looks fantastic). I even played through Alice again a few months back in a mega high setting, it looked immense with all the eye candy turned on.
