Sapphire Radeon R9 Nitro 390X for 1440p gaming

Just see the deal for the Sapphire Radeon R9 Nitro 390X at £284.99 and wow what a price for a GTX980 killer.

I've been wanting to game at 1440p for some time now and I've been waiting for the price of 980Ti's to come down so I can play my games with max settings at 1440p and the FPS doesn't drop below 60.

But now I've seen this 390X for a ridiculously cheap price. What do I do!? My setup was going to be this:

    Dell S2716DG
    Zotac AMP GTX980Ti

But after seeing the 390X I'm thinking of going for this:

    Sapphire Radeon R9 Nitro 390X
    Ilyama Prolite B2783QSU-B1

That's half the price but will I get half the performance? Is FREESYNC as good as GSYNC?

Recent drivers improved the low frame rate problem where gsync used to be better, so they are pretty much equivalent now apart from the £100 difference in price. Not that you will be seeing a low frame rate problem with a 390X

Freesync is doing the trick for me, I am using a http://www.ebuyer.com/701934-benq-xl...r-9h-ldclb-qbe with just an R9 285.

I would say if you case/cooling system can handle the extra thermal output of the Radeon and the Sapphire-Ilyama combo is cheaper, go for it! I am pretty sure you should be within 75-85% of the performance.

Depends on the game, but the 980 and 390X seem fairly well matched on average: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1442?vs=1559

I think the OP in the first post stipulated the 390X against a 980Ti. But even better then if the 390X is more or less matched against the 980.

I think it goes like this (if I am not mistaken).
    R9 390 vs 970
    R9 390X vs 980
    R9 Fury vs 980Ti

    More like:
    390 vs. 970
390X/Nano/Fury vs. different 980s (stock, small PCB, overclocked)
    Fury X vs. 980ti.

Yes that list looks about right, though both teams have had recent driver updates so I don't know just how accurate it is.

I read it that the OP was comparing the 390X to a 980, but lusting after a ti. Perhaps he is too busy enjoying a 390X and freesync to come back and talk to us so we might never know

Like I posted on HUKD, personally I'd have the MSI 290X currently on Amazon Warehouse deal selection for circa £196.

Have a view of the middle 2 columns in this chart.

IMO I couldn't justify near enough 45% increase over the price of a 290X if I was buying now. Many reviews don't clock 290/X at same speed as 390/X therefore you see more of a difference, HardOCP also did a clock vs clock review.

If I was desperate for 8GB I see the 390 as a better buy than the 390X. The 10% extra shaders on a 390X don't equate to 10% extra performance over a 390 @ same clocks.

I used to own a Tri-X 290 and when I compared it with not 1 but 2 290Xs I've owned there was very little difference in FPS when clocked the same.

You should be fine... The money you saved should IMO be put to getting a bit more RAM + SSD... A SSD would be an excellent investment!
