Gigabyte GTX Titan Completely Dead, No Power

Hi all so i recently "inherited" an old but very decent spec pc including a Gigabyte GTX Titan card. The PC booted and all was fine for a couple of days. Then yesterday I reinstalled windows onto an SSD and when I went to do the Windows performance rating it shut itself down and now the PC wont boot with the Titan card in, which appears to be completely dead. No power, no fan, no lights etc. Tried the card in different PC's with different psu's and I'm certain the card is dead.

So as it's well outside it's warranty I'm more than happy to take the cooler off and look inside to see if anything's amiss under the hood. The question is if nothing obvious is blown does anyone have any other ideas of where to look or stick a multimeter??

Any and all help would be appreciated as I'm not an electrical engineer but would like to have a probe before I bin it.

    Cheers

    Jim

Sorry looking at heatsinks is as far as I go. Are there any obvious signs of damage ? Charring ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Not got the fan shroud and heatsink off so dont know yet but I have a suspicion that the original psu may have taken it out as that appears to be faulty too.

Re: Gigabyte GTX Titan Completely Dead, No Power

So the only issue that is obvious is in this photo below. The square thing circled & has the labelled 1R0 has a crack in it inthe bottom left corner which runs across the middle of it. Anyone know what this is or does???

Re: Gigabyte GTX Titan Completely Dead, No Power

The image cannot be displayed because it contains errors is all get trying either of the links, even opening them directly. Weird if you're seeing it.

Anyway the square thing labelled 1RO is probably a resistor as that's an SMD code for a 1 ohm resistor. Probably part of the mosfet and fit's your theory about the PSU killing it. If it's the only problem then you might be able to do some kind of bodge with a hobby-shop resistor and a steady hand. Never tried it myself and can't see them image so I'm guessing. I suppose there's not much to lose by trying if it's already dead.

Re: Gigabyte GTX Titan Completely Dead, No Power

Yeah that's a resistor, so theoretically repairable, I know people resolder caps all the time, but I've never actually heard of anyone doing it with a resistor but it's a rare failure, so it's not to say it's impossible.

    What you'd need to buy would be a "1r0 SMD resistor" which will cost about 10p it's not the issue. The problem you're going to face is it will require some fairly decent soldering gear; precision soldering iron(40w is normally recommended for GPU work), solder sucker bare minimum, solder wick and a multimeter ideally~£50-100 total. Not to mention some skill or practice; that's a pretty difficult solder, tiny bit of mess or a slip and the whole card is dead. Unless you know someone or can already do it yourself honestly a professional repair might be a smarter option;

    http://www.tfix.co.uk/product/pcie-g...epair-service/

Never used them, noticed the link while googling the resistor. £99 flat rate, should be well within their ability.

ETA: another thought; getting a resistor in the right resistance isn't hard at all, form factor might be an issue that's a very tight fit already not to mention you need room to solder round.

Re: Gigabyte GTX Titan Completely Dead, No Power

Ah bugger just had another thought(late night brainfart) the same measuring convention is used for inductors, I'd expect it to be a resistor but I can't say for sure by looking. I'd have to recommend a pro tbh. Maybe pop over to iFixit. Might be someone more knowledgeable over there.

The 1R0 circled looks like a choke/inductor/coil, probably feeding something important like that chip to the right of it. If it's failed I'd say there's a good chance the chip has fried.

thanks guys, I'll try ifix.it but also I may know someone with appropriate skills and equipment. Such a shame to ditch a card like this but I think it'll be the likely outcome.

Re: Gigabyte GTX Titan Completely Dead, No Power

If you know someone with the skills it seems a shame to bin it without even trying especially considering how cheap that part is. Just need to find someone who can give you a definitive answer as to exactly what it is. I discounted it being a coil due to their being a coil of that rating just to the right.

After some sleep and more googling the internet seems to concur it's an inductor and that they tend to blow. A few almost identical pic's to yours. Apparently that whole area was cheaped out on and furmark likes to kill them. https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?hl=en...n+1r0+inductor

If it just died of old age/heavy use I'd say a fix would likely work, but it could of been blown by a problem somewhere else in the card in which case replacing it will get you nothing but a puff of white smoke.

Given it's such a high end card and apparently a common problem shooting an email to gigabyte might be worth a go. Also are you sure it's out of warranty? even if it was bought at launch it would be just under 4 years old and their standard warranty is 3 years. Email: returns@gbt-tech.co.uk

Thanks for all that info, it does seem like a very common fault on these cards. I'll go down the warranty route 1st, if that fails then I'll see if my mate can help out, failing that then it's in the bin.
