    Is it worth going to a r9 380x from a 7970 @1200/1500

Not enough information to answer the question.

Need to know what resolution, what games, and what your threshold for worth is.

And how much of an improvement do you need to see for it to be worth it to you?

    Re: 7970 to r9 380x ?

The R9 380X is basically a slightly faster HD7970GE with improved tessellation, improved VR support, improved OpenCL support and better DX12 performance.

However it's not massively faster - I would be more inclined to wait for Polaris.

    Re: 7970 to r9 380x ?

I did have xfire with a 7950 with both clocks at 1100/1500 but sold the 7950 for £75 today and looking at them results, i say its not worth going to the 380x really is it.

No vr or freesync for the time being.

    Re: 7970 to r9 380x ?

Even with Freesync I would doubt the usefulness of an upgrade.

I have been playing Elite Dangerous, and have switched from fullscreen mode which should have FreeSync enabled to "borderless windowed" because in that mode I can use my second monitor in a fairly natural way. I still have 144Hz fixed sync, I can't really feel any difference. If I have better than an R9 285 then perhaps the freesync would be more benefit, but with the monitor starting a new frame every 7ms I'm not losing much.

If your 285 can keep the ouput that high then there won't be a benefit from freesync. Even if it can't, you're dropping to 77fps and then 50fps for each additional frame missed which is plenty quick for a non-twitch game.

I doubt it can keep up with 144Hz, so I expect I am switching between 77fps and 50fps all the time, kind of a poor man's variable sync

In a twitch game I doubt I would care so much about having a browser open on a second screen. Having live trading info, group chat etc open is worth way more than variable sync on Elite though.

Maybe some months back. Seems with todays drivers the 380X has gained more performance and is a little faster then a 280X, thats a little faster than a HD7970.

The headline "60% performance increase" in the latest drivers were just fixing the GCN1.2 cards that were awful on those couple of games though.
