    6600 GT on 250 Watts ??

    Hi,

Would a GeForce 6600 GT work on this pc:

    P4 CPU 2.53GHz
    512mb DDR
    80Gb 5400rpm hdd
    16x dvd and 24x CD-rw drive
    geforce 4 mx 440

    with a 250 W psu ???

    Or should I just get a Tagan 480 W or Akasa 420 W ?

    Thanks.

No probs with using one in my Shuttle which has a 250W supply. I have put my 5900XT back in for now though while I source a quieter HSF for it

The psu is the stock one that came with a PAckard Bell pc.
I got these readings from Everest:

    CPU Core 1.50 V
    +3.3 V 3.28 V
    +5 V 4.95 V
    +12 V 11.92 V
    -12 V -11.38 V
    +5 V Standby 4.97 V
    VBAT Battery 3.22 V

    If that helps.

It's impossible to say for certain whether it will work or not - the only way to find out is to try it.

    Mike right's - there's no definate answer.

If you have a high quality stable PSU, "250W" (wattage ratings are hugely misleading but lets not confuse the issue) will be absolutely fine for that system.

If you have an el' cheapo poor quality PSU, "400W" might not be able to run that system stably.

Seriously, plug it in and run some system load tests.

You'd also better check that it has a 20+4 pin ATX connector. Unless its a PSU from a SFF PC, 250W suggests that it might have the older 20 pin only ATX spec.

    Thanks anyway.

I'm getting the gfx card in a week. If it doesnt work with my existing psu, then I'll get a new one.

It would quite possibly work, as in boot up, but you could experiance trouble when its under intensive load, which is when it is drawing the most power. Try it and see if it can handle some long gaming sessions. or loop 3dmark. If it reboots/crashes/blue screens then it will probably be a power problem.

tbh i wouldn't expect it to work.

before you ask what psu to get check the other 100 or so threads

it depends on the rail and strength of the psu, ideally it should be a good one with good reputation,

but suck it and see, if it doesnt boot, you know it won't work!

just do a search and see what is recommended! (for good psus!) prepare to spend more than £40

the other downside is if its still in the packard bell case that it maybe a custom size PSU so replacing it may require a case change. So although I am not hopeful, you need to try it with the 250W psu to be certain, comparisons to shuttle PSU's are not realistic, the quality comparison is massive as shuttle specifically made the PSU to be able to cope, knowing packard bell gear, they wont have and it probably was out before the high power cards came out.

Yeah the shuttle PSUs are good. I know of people over on the sudhian forums that are running fully loaded toaster PCs with 6800GTs on the stock 200W PSU which is pretty amazing really

It will work in a shuttle fine but I would debate it working in an oem system with 250w. Its not always about the wattage but the quality as said above

I would get a new psu.. is it worth risking using a 250w one?

Even my AMD k6-2 350 system was running on a 300w psu. My duron 950 was on a 350w... and now 550w for my 2.2 athlon.
