Why did my Radeon through an HDMI cable to my UHD TV not show the edges of Windows.

    Lo people

    Got an R9 290 and a new TV (Hitachi UHD 4k )

both run beautifully.. so I lugged the PC down to the living room, nearly killed myself on the stairs ;-) and plugged in

How come the 4k res didn't take Windows to the edges but beyond (off the screen) so I couldn't see the top edges or lower edges or far left and right?

Was it the cable? Res was set right. No refresh options visible.

Up close it was SHARP. it was good enough I could use on my PC desk when they're cheap again

Re: Why did my Radeon through an HDMI cable to my UHD TV not show the edges of Window

My Samsung 1080 TV does the same by default - there was an overscan setting buried in the advanced part of the TV menu though it wasn't called anything as nice as "overscan" if memory serves. Also if you have the facility to rename the input to "PC" that often knocks off a lot of the image enhancement and reduces lag as well as other 'silly' settings - or there may be a dedicated "game" mode in the settings.

On my old Sony LCD that I use on my racing rig you cant turn overscan off so I had to use the scaling options in the ATI driver.

Re: Why did my Radeon through an HDMI cable to my UHD TV not show the edges of Window

Before an update on my 1080p Toshiba TV, I had to set my resolution in the NVIDIA drivers to 1844 x 1044. Wouldn't work any other way.

Try altering the image size in the driver settings?

Its most likely a tv setting. Its quite easy to remedy.

Re: Why did my Radeon through an HDMI cable to my UHD TV not show the edges of Window

It is a stupid throwback to the days of CRT screens when pictures were never quite the proper rectangle, so to get getting funny gaps around the image the set lets the image go past the edge of the screen. It became part of the standard, so images are created assuming 5% is going to be thrown away off the edge.

The driver can scale it back, but that means you reduce the output display by 5% so when the tv scales it back up 5% it looks right, but because it involved shrinking the image you lose a few pixels. You had more of those than you need, so can probably get away with it fine

How you tell the TV not to scale isn't standard. My Samsung needs a port renaming to "PC" and has to be on a specific hdmi port. I think on the LG set one of the ports doesn't overscan so you have to choose the right one. On the cheap 1080p screen in my son't room you can't turn it off, so his PC uses the VGA port or things look jagged.

Whenever I've had this it was because the overdrive needed maxing out in the driver options.

what this means... if it works... is that I can have a HUMUNGOUS 43" UHD monitor for £300 if it drops back to what I paid

Ebuyer are doing a 39" UHD for £190. Only draw back is the 30Hz refresh rate at 4K. Perfect if you're not gaming though.

The Catalyst control center does offer the option to do overscan itself so it's possible, but as others have said it's usually the fault of the TV. .

It's the equivalent to a 21.5" 1920x1080 screen in pixel size so you could say it's actually a little on the small size. 8 Megapixels is a lot if you want to use them all for more space rather than better rendering.

If you're using the open source drivers under Linux, this should do the trick (adjust borders/output as needed; these are what I need for my TV):
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set underscan on --set "underscan hborder" 40 --set "underscan vborder" 25
