    Thoughts on a new GPU?

So - my 4 year PC lifecycle is almost back at the "new build" stage. This time around the build is more focussed on virtualisation workstation than gaming, and I'm reasonably happy with what I've pulled together for that *however* I'm currently torn on the GPU to use. I'm currently gaming at 1920*1200, and can't see that changing any time soon - my current card is a HD7970. Given that I tend to build once and not get on the upgrade cycle (barring adding SSDs over the life of the current machine) I tend to prefer to spend a decent amount on a card that will last me.

So: if you were spending something in the region of £4-500 would you be looking at the current gen of nVidia cards or hold out for the next gen? I'm not averse to moving the 7970 across to the new build for a few months as I'm generally still ok with how it performs. Plus if I can eke out another 3 or 4 months from this card it means I can spend some money on beer in the meantime (or save toward an OR, or similar).

Did I just answer my own question?

I'm in a not hugely dissimilar situation, and while keeping an eye out on second hand good GPUs, am realistically expecting to wait for the next gen.

Re: Thoughts on a new GPU?

I'm in a similar boat with an 3GB R7950 BE in my rig at present... I've done a fair bit of research and watched a LOT of Youtube reviews, for the around £ you describe the card I'd go for is this:

MSI 980TI GAMING 6G (there are other flavours available but MSI is quietest, while not far off the top in terms of performance, ASUS STRIX is also worth a look - more HERE), shop around but I found them for around the £550 mark (not cheap but it should last you a long time), be careful as there is also a 6GLE (Light edition) available, which is obviously cheaper but not as good!

Best price I've found so far is £550 HERE, there's a used one on EBay for £450 at the moment too...

However, if you can stretch to £600, there is this monster, the Corsair Hydro GFX 980TI -

Comes with a liquid AIO cooler - again there in an MSI version, know as the Sea Hawk, but reviews seem to suggest the Corsair ones are better with serious overclocking headroom... I'm going for one to power my monster VR rig as I have HTC Vive arriving in April!

Re: Thoughts on a new GPU?

On that budget a 390X is the sensible buy if you wanted something now. As you say though, if you're happy with your 7970 at the moment then it makes more sense to keep it and replace it in a year or so.

Re: Thoughts on a new GPU?

I would go for a cheap 290x or a 780ti and keep the rest till new cards out from both sides, or get a nice 250gb-500gb ssd if you already haven't got one.

Re: Thoughts on a new GPU?

If the 7970 is fast enough, then keep it. Sounds like next gen Nvidia may be announced this month though I don't expect to see product on shelves for ages. AMDs cards have been seen running demos for ages, they shouldn't be far off being able to buy one.

Re: Thoughts on a new GPU?

You are far better off waiting. Cards from both Red and Green are due to be announced in the next few months and it would be wise, seeing as you are still relatively happy with your 7970, to wait and see if something in the upcoming mid-range (price-wise) won't perform nearly as good as today's top-range cards.

I'm in a similar position and cannot really justify spending the money now only to kick myself through regret in a month or two.

THIS close to the new stuff?
Wait, wait and wait again.... I'm doing the same, too. Absolutely NO point buying current market models at this point.

I might even wait for one of the Non-reference cards to emerge as the top of the pack... ha ha - Cards, pack, geddit!!

Thanks guys, I think I'll keep a hold on the 7970 for now - I think that was my gut feeling, but it's good to have it confirmed by people who keep up to date on this kinda thing.

Really? I guess all the hype is just.... hype.

Yep keep it! As long as you can play games at all you are alright for now, so just play the waiting game and you will be fine.

Give it a overclock to 1200/1600 as thats what most 7970's done, to get you some more fps, mine clocked to 1250/1500 and smashed most games @60fps with high- very high settings using vsr to 1440p.

If you want a card so bad right now get a fury from ocuk for £350.

Re: Thoughts on a new GPU?

I'm speculating that the top end Polaris 10 card will perform close to fury/x levels and nvidia's pascal GP104 offerings will match (1070) and beat (1080) the 980ti. In the interest of money, I would hold off until the summer to check out some benches of the new cards before pulling the trigger.
