    GTX 1080 prices: £600+ ?

Are the GTX 1080's really going to launch at over £600? I was expecting somewhere in the region of £500.
I'm really looking forward to upgrading my trusty 670. I've got a Vive (still boxed!) just waiting for something to power it. Soon now!

I remember reading about the original Rift annoucement, I think over 6 years ago when Digg.com was popular. It's been a long wait and it's so close now. These are exciting times friends!

They already have, so to speak. OcUK are listing pre-orders starting at £620.

However, in theory the ones with third-party coolers will be cheaper. We'll have to see how that pans out though.

Yes, just as they announced. The founders editions are at a premium:

    the non-reference models are 'cheaper'.

The slower GTX 980ti is £500+ so why shouldn't they launch at £600?

That's dangerous logic. The 980ti probably only exists because the Fury was about to be launched, so if it wasn't for Fury then you could be saying "The slower Titan is £900, why shouldn't they launch at £1000"

Indeed. The titan Z launched at £2400, and I think the 1080 might beat it in some games like The Witcher 3.. so maybe it should be much more expensive

Because new versions of products usually get priced at the same price point as the old model they are replacing. So really, I'd of expected the 1080 to be same price as the 980 at launch.

If newer models were always priced higher than the older version it supersedes, then the cost of everything would increase significantly every time there is a new version!

    Re: GTX 1080 prices: £600+ ?

So far it seems the non-FE cards with custom coolers are around £50-£60 cheaper than the FE cards (excluding the overclocked/specialist versions) - at most retailers anyway. I've pre-ordered the Gigabyte G1 at Amazon for 560, which i'm (relatively!) happy with. Same price at OCUK but I trust Amazon a lot more

Disappointingly some retails are ripping people off with the prices and charging a lot more (likely due to the demand) - Scan are one of the worst this time around, asking £630 for exactly the same card (£60 more). It's the same story across the range. Scandalous! (sorry )

Perhaps they should launch at what the market will bear, rather than what a load of people that wouldn't buy one anyway think they should launch at?

Personally, I think the FE cards were a good idea. When a new fastest GFX card is released, there's price gouging by retailers that have stock because some people are prepared to pay a premium to avoid waiting a few weeks (or in some cases recently, months)

Why let the retailers get all of that?

If they want to be known as a company with over-priced products then they are welcome to do so, but this part of the market won't bear it. My GTX460 was a stonking card at a good price as often used to be the case at that price level, it has all seemed a bit rubbish since then though. I think that is the problem, the bonkers pricing at the high end has trickled all the way down to the mid range and beyond such that even the GTX750ti last I looked was over £100.

But then I have only spent about £370 on graphics cards for the family PCs in the last year so what do Nvidia care when they can gouge more than that in pure profit on a single sale to some sucker.

Formalising the early adopter price gouge? That only exists when silicon is in short supply, ie when the card is basically a paper launch. So now we are rewarding Nvidia for doing a paper launch. Nice

If they are price-gouging so much, why aren't there other companies swooping into the market to make a killing by under-cutting them? It's not like AMD have been coining it in while under-cutting nVidia. Seems to me like it's a market that costs a lot of money to fund.

Perhaps they should call them "Funders Edition" cards

    lol!

Sadly I don't think we will be seeing any more companies entering the PC graphics market. Not ever.

There are a few left in mobile, but even then in practice it seems to be down to Qualcomm vs ARM and I expect them to stay firmly in mobile. That's largely why I don't understand people on some forums hoping for the death of AMD, how can they think life will be better once down to Intel vs Nvidia? Specially with the history between them, I wouldn't rate Nvidia's long term chance if they get Intel's focussed attention.

I suspect that is why Nvidia is raking in the money while they can, they could do with a war-chest for the times ahead if they can't get their ARM CPU to take off (which I really hope it does, it is one of the few really interesting designs of recent times).

I'm wondering what the hybrid cards are going to cost, Overclockers has the evga hybrid at £689 which is pretty darn pricey. Availability has been so meagre though, unless other companies start offering preorders it's their market for now.
