Indian Customers hitting hard on NVIDIA for its insane pricing of 1080 Graphics card
Quote:
Zotac, Gigabyte, ASUS have listed their price 57% to 87% higher than the price announced at the Nvidia launch event.
- Zotac asking for U$D +411 (+59%) extra!
- Gigabyte asking for U$D +396 (+57%) extra!
- ASUS asking for U$D +411 (+59%) extra!
also
- ASUS non-Founder's Edition asking for U$D +525 (+87%) extra!
(This is epic to see non-Founder's Edition is more expensive than Founder's Edition)

They are flooding the Amazon product pages of Zotac, Gigabyte, ASUS with 1 STAR reviews and negative comments.

Re: Indian Customers hitting hard on NVIDIA for its insane pricing of 1080 Graphics c
Why are they hitting on nVidia when it's someone else charging the higher price? As AMD clarified, it's likely they just set one price which is what they charge for their chips. Once the chips have left their hands there can be other costs like shipping, tax, duty/tarifs and plain market conditions in markets *other* than the one they are selling in.
And leaving a one-star review for a product they don't even have is just beyond contempt.

One of my pet hates.
People who leave reviews of products they've never touched in real life ought to be publicly flogged, or at the very least forever barred from using said service. Then there are those (generally Americans it seems) who leave single star reviews because their product was delivered a day later than expected, or who give a book a single star because they don't like the author's views on something or other. For such abominable f*ckwits flogging is far too lenient and hopefully Beelzebub has a special corner reserved for them in hell.
Pardon the OT; like I said: one of my pet hates.

For Indians, this is the perfect weapon for them to show their protest and grab the attention of greedy managements of Nvidia, Zotac, Gigabyte, ASUS.
Their anger has one common point, 57% to 87% extra can not be due to Tax. Shipping cost also do not add that much extra charge specially other graphics card are coming from the same factory, same country, China.
Wow some incredible ripping off of consumers.
Re: Indian Customers hitting hard on NVIDIA for its insane pricing of 1080 Graphics c
Looks a bit harsh - hard to find good figures but it looks like India does charge import duties on "populated PCBs", which I'm pretty sure would include graphics cards. Sales tax is ~ 15%. Potentially there are higher costs involved in shipping to India? I guess it's a pretty large country to cover - logistics must be a bit of a pain. So I'm not surprised they're more expensive there, but well over $1000 does look rather gouging. Be interested to hear if there's an explanation for that one - I know there are currency conversaion taxes in India but they're not exactly exhorbitant...
Looks like one way we do benefit in the UK is that there is a 0% import duty on computer equipment. One less cost associated with getting our favourites computer bits... ;)

400 bucks for a brand new top end GPU??!!
That sounds awesome!!
Heck, I paid over £400 for my 780 Lightning shortly before it became obsolete!!
They're now under £200... :(
Re: Indian Customers hitting hard on NVIDIA for its insane pricing of 1080 Graphics c
Just to compare & contrast us Norwegians with those poor, poor Indians:
Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition - $884,-
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition - $891,-
Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition - $910,-
(best available prices as of right now)
We're ever so slightly more affluent than the average Indian up here, but somehow I don't think the people writing those reviews are Dalits, Sudras and Vaisyas....

The US$ amounts quoted are the mark-ups over the published $699 US pre-tax price. The 70,000+ rupee prices on Amazon.in translate to > $1000. That's quite a markup - the UK retail price of £619 for a founders edition is less than 60,000 rupees. So Indian consumers are being asked to pay 20% more than UK consumers for the same product.
So unless the Indian import taxes on GPUs are of the order of 20% or more, the prices do seem unexpectedly high...

But we'll never know, since the OP hasn't been back to Hexus since making that post :(
A quick google finds identical posts on a huge number of forums/sites though. Hexus, you've been SEO'd ;)
Re: Indian Customers hitting hard on NVIDIA for its insane pricing of 1080 Graphics c
There are a range of import and other taxes applied to the importing of graphics cards to India.

However, there are so many, and it seems so complicated that I can't determine an absolute figure, but it seems to be around 16.5%

Not unusual, sadly; we're a good sized and fairly rapidly moving forum with good internal SEO anyway. I used to be surprised at how often a Hexus thread popped up fairly high in my google search results.
And tbh, this particular drive-by has raised interesting questions about international trade and pricing... ;)
Re: Indian Customers hitting hard on NVIDIA for its insane pricing of 1080 Graphics c
This is probably just price gouging by retailers more than anything else tbh
