Huh? Compare nVidia to half life? One is a game, one is a card manufacturer..

It seems like I'm gonna have to bang the Nvidia drum. Get a vanilla 6800, unlock the pipelines with Rivatuner, change the heatsink/fan and overclock it. GT-like performance (which as far as I can see beats X800XL overall, i.e. not HL2) for the same price as the XL.

It often amuses me how much people argue over those few frames per second that are totally indescernable to the naked eye yet totally forget about the rest of the cards features!

Has no one mentioned Nvidia's apparent lack of proper, bug free hardware DVD decoding on its latest slew of cards?

the man has a very good point, this is a bit of a dissapointment...however, i am yet to notice any problems on mine, i wonder how different things would be if it worked, would i notice the difference?

    Ati-nvidia

Check it out, an old review but some key info regarding actual quality. What do you want? An unperceivable difference in average fps? Or the best quality?

To be honest i've seen no improvement at the resolutions I play at between my old 9800pro and my new 6800GT.
I have an LCD with a 1280x1024 native resolution and the 9800 ran all games at high detail with no problem. The benchmarks are higher obviously, but normal gaming there is no discernable difference.
If I was using a CRT and played aT 1600X1200 it would make a difference.

TBH this Nvidia v ATI argument is a bit of a waste of time. Both manufacturers produce cards that will wipe the floor with any games currently produced.
I buy the best I can afford at the time when I'm upgrading be it ATI or Nvidia.

    Thumbs up Q:Andrzej

No argument here bro, just a spot of informal banter. I find the whole business interesting, as do others. But thanks for your input.

Andrzej: I want to see (I think stoo would agree) a screen saver involving a Minotaur hoard reaping chaos through the quiet little tree dwelling of those nvidia fairies, or something to that fairy-squishing effect would be so good . Please can you arrange this us?

its just the way rival companies compete, one year nVidia will rule, the next ATi... for example the Ti4200 to 4800 series killed almost everything, then up popped the 9500 and 9700pro's, swiftly followed by the 9800's which dominated even the heartiest of the, quite laughably noisey FX series from nvidia. now the 6800/6600GT's have put nvidia a notch ahead...
its tit for tat, and it can only be good for us as consumers cause we get the best possible, and constant competition only serves to drive down prices so inthe end 'budget' doesn't mean poor quality rubbish either...

It's never really been about having the best card out there for either of these two clashing titans it's been about reputation and a "mine's bigger than yours" attitude. I for one salute this. We're a niche group, that's what makes us enthusiast. They don't make but a small amount targeting us the ones who will want the biggest, strongest, coolest fps crunching piece of circuits. *neaderthal grunt* They do it for us, for they're reputation and for advertisement. (And because this years high end will keep selling well into the next generation as a mid range card but that point doesn't help me )

it all comes down to experience. i was sooo tempted to get a 6800gt because of shadermark 3.0. But as this was so early on in this generation with lack of reviews and such i just opted for the company i trusted and got most satisfaction from which was ati. As said IQ is everything (too me anyway) i like 1600x1200 with eye candy galore. And at those settings only ATI does it for me.
