Ati-nvidia

It seems as though I can’t flick a page or scan a web site without seeing NVIDIA although ATI is there in my peripheral vision, NVIDIA is more aggressive with it. We all know this but faced with a choice which would I choose? Firstly you have the in your face marketing of NVIDIA to suppress while you really root out which is the best choice for you, which is what I did. NVIDIA was the best choice and had the most appeal for me initially but as I’ve looked at all the customer feedback from 6800 owners in the last 5-6 weeks it’s not looking so good. Also scrutinizing actual rendered frames from various modern games I find the most beautiful quality; and all-round solid, consistent benchmarks coming from ATI and here’s the thing I mean from graphics cards you can actually buy easily!

I think the problem is ATI doesn't really have anything in the mid range £150 bracket that can compete with the 6600gt except the 9800pro, x700 wasn;t really much of a competitor

Right now, I think nVidia are stronger. In the last generation, I think ATi's 9x00s were the better choice compared to nVidia's FXs, but nVidia have now come back with the 6800s, which are around the same performance as the X800s. In the arguably more important mid range, the AGP 6600GT only has competition in the form of the 9800 Pro, which is generally slower and uses older technology. Overall, I think nVidia are in a winning position, but it's nothing that can't change yet again with the arrival of a new generation.

well i want a card for 200 pcie and there seems to be nothing! Im waiting for the x800 and x800xl to come, seee how much they ga for an when i can get them!

yer, its all very similar if u talk top end, i made my choice for an ati card as i heard a lot of people mentioning problems with their 6800's well, the x800xt pe is slightly faster also but not at everything

ATi all the way, less power, less noise :)

Although it does depend on what's around at the time I need to upgrade :)

I don't understand the pricing of graphics cards. If cards are priced according to their performance the x800pro would be on average slightly cheaper than the 6800gt. Then the whole which card is the best scenario is diffused (hmm should that be de-fused?) because they both represent the same value. If ATI are loosing sales to Nvidia it's not because Nvidia have better cards it's because ATI have got the pricing wrong. I don't care if a card is slightly slower since for me it boils down to whether or not the FPS per £ spent represents good value or at the least a fair deal in comparison. I am not unhappy with the performance of the x800pro and would probably go out and buy one if it were correctly priced.

it really does depend what games you want to play, if you are keen on doom3 then Nvidia, ATi for halflife2, remember that quake4 (think its 4) will be based on the halflife2 engin. I would personally go for ATI but you really need to get what you need and can afford.

If you buy a £400 card just to play a particular £25 game, you really need your head read tbh..

Q4 will be using the doom3 engine not the HL2 engine

k lol, i get mixed up, i was impressed by that big robot thing :) What will be usng the Hl2 engine?

i'd agree with the above £150-200 i'd (and did) go for nvidia and havent regretted it for one minute!! for the pricey cards i'd say they're much of a much, tho my mates x800 pro seems no better than my 6800, certainly gets 10-15% less in 3d mark 03 (prob cos mine overclocks well -good memory) not the be-all and end-all i know, but it cost £80 more! i would wait for the x800 xl as that looks sweet as pie and will be nice and quiet :)

not as much as the doom 3 engine

it's worth nothing that the quake 3 engine is _STILL_ being licensed today, everyone will pay absolutely anything for a Carmack engine. the only game i know of which uses SOurce is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - and it's a poor advert for the engine, though a good game at its heart

expect to see the doom 3 engine powering a huge number of games over the next 5 years. nvidia's edge in opengl performance (i.e. the doom 3 engine) will become more important as more games are released on the engine.

Thats not really what i mean, i was trying to say that you cant compare Nvidia to ATi in just FPS in a game.

either way, its all very interesting and as more and more games are released then i spose we'll see who the winner really is :D (c'moooon ati :D)
