Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
Hey guys,
So I'm in the process of upgrading both mine and my wife's PC's.
I've got mine completely nailed down spec-wise but am struggling a little with the hers!
She'll be inheriting my dual 27" monitor setup as I've just moved over to an Acer x34 :)
Looking to spend roughly £1,000 on her entire build, so what graphics card should I be looking at for her?
She's a light gamer, mainly dabbles with FPS games like the Unreal series, Left For Dead 2 and Pay Day 2. I think she'd enjoy Overwatch as well.
Thanks :)
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
Rx470 or GTX1050Ti would do with a Quad core i Series Intel or Quad core A AMD series with 8gb DDR3 1866
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
Hi. I've seen a few posts recently on this topic. Bottom line is that if shes playing generally mid-tier games with mid / high eye candy then the 1050Ti will be enough. However I'd go 1060 to be safe and add a little future-proofing. And if she wants to play newer, more stressful titles like Witcher 3 then she may even need a 1070 (although that's pushing the budget).
Also. I'm lining up to buy an X34. I'd love to hear your thoughts on your new monitor.
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
I had the last two Nvidia 60 series cards and the AMD equivalents lasted longer. The GTX1050TI is overpriced and most reviews only tested expensive pre-overclocked versions which were £150+ and the card is barely better than my GTX960,which can struggle in newer games at higher settings. The RX470 can be had for a bit more and is massively faster.
The GTX1060 3GB I won't recommend due to the amount of VRAM and there is already some issues in newer games, and the OP needs to think the card probably needs to last a few years.
The RX480 will most likely outlive the GTX1060,if prior history repeats itself and tends to have the edge overall in DX12 and Vulkan, but either would do the job.
The R9 Fury can be had for under £300:

The core is generally faster than the one in the RX480 and GTX1060. 4GB is OK at 1080P but OFC the newer cards have more VRAM which will probably help as time progresses.
The GTX1070 is in another class compared to the RX470 and RX480 and is faster than a R9 Fury.
I would say an RX470 once it gets back into offer should be more than enough for the games listed IMHO OFC,and also give some leeway for newer games OFC.

Thanks for the advice, yeah it's definitely intended to last a few years.
I think the current CPU in her machine at the moment is a one of the Core i7's from around the time the i7 920 would have been released, so I think thats around 10 years old.
But yeah, she's a light user and mainly uses it for browsing, light gaming or movie watching etc... These days its all about tablets/mobiles :P
So I'm really trying to get the balance right between spending the right amount of money that it can last for a good period of time for her, and that offers good performance as well without breaking the bank.

I would say a RX470 should be fine then, especially seeing that the Powercolor Red Devil RX470 4GB as been offer for £165 to £170 recently.
However,it might be worth checking if the motherboard is compatible with an RX400 or GTX1000 series card too.

Yeah, this one is for a new build so the compatibility isn't an issue :)

TBF,an R9 380,GTX960 or GTX1050TI would probably be fine too,but the RX470 has enough extra power just in case she wants to play a new title.
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
The RX 470 seems like a great option with the deals around.
I'm building a new rig myself, and tempted to save money by going for this card and hoping that updates keep it going for a while. I believe it may be sufficient for the games I want to play whilst saving money.
However, a 8gb RX 480 or GTX 1060 around the £220 mark would probably make me bite.
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
Are you open to second hand? Pick up a GTX 970 for about £140, same price as a new 1050 Ti but with performance around the 1060 level.
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
Given this thread is a couple of weeks old this might be a bit late for the OP, but I've just noticed that Overclockers have Sapphire's Platinum edition RX 470 for £149.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapph...gx-37g-sp.html
It's basically what would've been a reference card if anyone had actually released a reference card, and at that price it's an absolute no-brainer, IMNSHO...
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
A little late to this discussion but since she is looking for light gaming, I'd recommend cards based on your budget. If you're looking for a decent mid-tier card that will run old and new games fairly well for some time, go for the GTX1050Ti but if you're looking for cheaper options (I would personally go for this because for the titles you mentioned the GTX1050Ti is kind of overkill tbh) you can check out my list of this year's best budget graphics cards for gaming. It includes cards for under 80 quid that will do just fine.
Edit: I forgot to mention that your 1000 quid budget is actually very generous and you can easily save money while still managing to get your wife a decent build, especially since she is getting a free monitor.
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
There are some great RX 470 deals out there at the moment, making the card a great choice for 1080p gaming.
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
I recently sold my old i7 960 asus rampage III Extreme with 12gb ram , this was running win 10 64 on 256gb sandisc x400 ssd , but tried it with xfx 6870 1gb , asus 750ti 2gb , gigabyte hd7970 3gb and gigabyte r9 290x 4gb , ran various games all worked well with this mobo and cpu ,
OP if your planning on.using the x58 1366 platform.for your mrs , a slight cpu upgrade can be done very cheaply now compared to when the system was new ,this will allow your new gfx card to perform more smoothly , of course you may not see vast inprovments depending on which motherboard you have ....
I realised your upgrading to be hinest i'de have kept the origonal system and upgraded it ....sorry my bad lol
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
Depends on what you want to spend - you can get an RX 470 for like 160 and I've seen the 1050 Ti as low as $130 this month. Either of those will do just fine. If you're wanting to max sure everything's maxed I'd get an i5 and GTX 1060 or RX 480 - if you're willing to tweak at all you can save some money by going with the options I first mentioned
Re: Best GPU For A 1080p Gaming Build
overclockers uk are doing cheap r9 furys which I have the nitro and its pretty good
