Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
There isn't a 10% fps hit in DX12 titles is there? So it depends what kind of game you play, and given you don't upgrade frequently I'd say the 480 is probably on equal footing to the 1060 at the very least.Seeing as it's also cheaper, it's probably quite clear which to go for :p
No, still not worth upgrading from a 3570K.
Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
Interesting you feel that your 670 hasn't aged well, I have a 680 and am currently playing Witcher 3 at 1440p. Ok the eye candy isn't as high as it can go, but I'm very impressed for a card almost 4 years old.
Both options look good upgrades to me. You can't go far wrong with either.
No point in upgrading the processor. Leave that to when you upgrade the entire PC.

Nail. Head.
The only other real consideration is your monitor refresh rate. I assume you haven't got a variable refresh rate monitor (otherwise the decision would pretty much be made for you), and if your monitor has a fixed 60Hz refresh then consider this: even in those games where the GTX 1060 comes out on top, the RX 480 is still turning in minimum framerates around 60fps @ 1080p - the only game in Hexus' Nitro 4GB review where the GTX 1060 beat the RX 480 and the RX 480 had a minimum framerate below 60fps was Rise of the Tomb Raider. So even where a GTX 1060 would be faster, the RX 480 pushes out more frames in a second than a 60Hz monitor could display. That's a stonking case for sticking vsync on and not worrying about it :)

Or for upgrading the monitor :)
Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
Kepler and Maxwell have shown reductions in performance overall against their equivalent Nvidia cards, and there is the console factor too.
My GTX960 and GTX660 got beaten by the AMD equivalents as time progressed.
Regarding the RX480,I would probably consider the 8GB version, although it is not the best value option compared to the 4GB one. It seems the GTX1060 6GB is generally selling for a bit less which indicates perhaps the RX480 is still quite popular.
This is meant to be the best RX480 out there:

FreeSync monitors are also much cheaper too.
Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
Indeed, I'm just on a plain old 60Hz monitor. I'll hopefully be getting around to playing Witcher 3 and GTA V, maybe Battlefield, so reasonably intensive stuff - but yes, 60fps is all I need and I guess the 480 meets that!
Would you recommend the Sapphire Nitro over the XFX RS edition 4GB, for £10?
My 670 definitely struggled hitting 60 in newer and prettier titles at higher settings. Plus it's a reference so is noisy and hot - I think it's time to treat myself!
Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
10% fps is neither here nor there. That's 44fps instead of 40fps. You'd have difficulty noticing it side by side and you'll certainly never see the difference from buying one card instead of the other.
I'd focus on the other areas that could make a difference. The price difference, the GTX 1060's better streaming, the RX 480's freesync support.

It's always a good time for treating yourself & either of these cards will give you a very nice boost.
Worth pointing out though that Witcher 3 is a beast of a game and I've seen reports on these forums recently that even a 1060 can struggle to push 60fps all the time with ALL the eye candy set to the MAX.

Indeed, although be aware that the RX 480 doesn't push 60fps in all games even now, let alone in the future. But if you're prepared to play with knocking down some of the settings you should be OK.
Of course, another consideration is whether you might want to upgrade the monitor at some point - going AMD now gives you the choice of the cheaper Freesync variable refresh technology in the future if you choose to move up in resolution...

Recommend? No. Warn you against? Also no. Brand is a choice you need to make. XFX have had a bad rep for reliability and customer service in the past, but I haven't dealt with them for many years so have no basis for saying either way. It's really up to personal preference.
Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
The XFX GTR RS seems to be the best of the RX480 cards looking at user reviews. Like with the Powercolor devil RX480,it seems to generally have the best performance/watt too.
Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
This is a question I'm struggling with as I decide to build my new rig.
As you say, the RX 480 seems to potentially have the best longevity over the GTX 1060 if you plump for the 8gb version. I can also reiterate that the XFX GTR seems to be the best version out there.
Ultimately, I think I will wait for Black Friday and see what I can get for cheapest around then.
Re: 1060 vs 480 at UK prices
Personally shop about for best price not really a good thing if your loyal to any particular store
You can get te XFX Rx480-RS 8GB for not much more i bought my 16 year old nephew (also an avid gamer) this for his birthday ,£220! this card is a solid performer , adjust the fan profiles to atleast 40% minimum and 70% under load and it will.not throttle as heavily as it would otherwise ,other system factors do have a knock on effect , and wont split your eardrums!!!
