Is the sli chip actually better than the ultra or not?

well, its the same so I'm guessing thats probably not what you should be asking. on the face of it though it seems that ultra has a few features disabled so on that basis SLI would be better, no?

The chips are the same (as I always said they were). There's only really much point doing the mod on the DFI Ultra board, which uses the same PCB layout as the SLI board, and can do the 8x+8x lanes of PCI-E. On any Ultra board which has a 1x or 2x PCI-E socket in the second video card position (e.g. the MSI board) I reckon that hacked drivers will overcome the block on using SLI anyway.

One possible issue is that you don't get an SLI bridge board - I'm not sure how available these are as spares. SLI will run without one mind, but it's going to be slower.
You can also get a card with two GPUs. That will work on any "unlocked" Ultra.
I thought those cards only worked on gigabyte boards?
At the moment they will only work on Gigabyte non-SLI boards - you can probably guess what Gigabyte have done...
