Which graphics card for digital photo editing ?

I plan to build a PC primarily for use in professional digital still photo editing. It will have an ASUS Mother Board with an AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 CPU. There are a number of graphic cards on the market geared towards gaming and 3D workstations. Many of these are popular, such as nvidia 6800 and ATI 800, but I don't know if they are technically suited to my purpose. I don't mind overkill however, I would like to at least have the minimum requirements covered. Can you recommend a graphic card(s) to use for digital photo editing?

Any modern card will be fine.

Traditionally, the Matrox cards produced the best 2D image quality (at the of expense 3D performance), but there's very little difference in image quality between manufacturers nowadays.

Any card with 32MB or more ram should do fine.

Matrox does have excelent 3d image quality, but you coudl get by fine with a cheap NVIDIA or ATI card.

What monitor(s) will you be using? I suppose CRT. Which size / resolution / refresh rates? I reckon you'll notice a much bigger difference between a £100 19inch monitor and a £250 19 inch monitor.
