RX 470 8GB or RX 480 4GB, which is the better long term buy?
Recently I've been seeing 8GB 470s and 4GB 480s for the same or similar prices, as someone looking to keep the same GPU for a long time, which offers better future proofing, the extra VRAM or additional CUs?
From what I can tell the two are quite close in performance and the lack of VRAM on my current card (an r7 260) seems to be the limiting factor, so I'm tempted to go with the 470, but I want to be sure I make the right purchase.

If you get in there fast enough, Scan seem to have an 8GB RX 480 for £210: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/xmas...pu-1306mhz-boo
I wouldn't stress over it though. 4GB is enough for the foreseeable future and seems to be becoming the new standard amount for mid range cards, so games writers will be tuning for it.
Was it a 1GB 260 you had? If so, I think that would be like buying a 2GB card now.

The 480 GPU is better than the 470 GPU.
8GB is noticeably better for games at 4K and high detail.
For 1080p, 4gb is plenty for 99% of games.

Wait for a good offer on an 8GB version of the RX 480. The RX 470 is ok, but you're better off with the 480 if you intend on keeping it for a while.
OcUK currently have the 8GB Red Devil model (PowerColor) for £218.99.... It's fast and also quiet! https://www.overclockers.co.uk/power...gx-188-pc.html

Purchased the RX480 8GB MSI version - can see a vast improvement on GTA, Arma etc.
I believe as others have said, 4GB is sufficient. The only game that I have seen surpass is Steep on ULTRA settings, cracking game that is.

I'd wait for the RX480 8GB to drop in price. Worth the wait for overall better performace that will last longer.
Re: RX 470 8GB or RX 480 4GB, which is the better long term buy?
the r9 480 is the better of the two but i would wait and see what vega had to offer first, judging by amd ryzen launch it fills me with hope that thier gpu dev pulls it off aswell tbh

The 8GB Sapphire Nitro+ RX 470 OC competes easily with an RX 480 and it's the only RX 470 to have 8Gbps memory afaik. It's a very worthy card if you can get it on an offer for less than an 8GB custom cooled RX 480 :)
Re: RX 470 8GB or RX 480 4GB, which is the better long term buy?
The RX480 GPU performs better than the 470GPU.
You don't need 8GB for 1080p.
A 470 8GB would cost more than a 4GB 470.
Re: RX 470 8GB or RX 480 4GB, which is the better long term buy?
Bear in mind, on the day of GTX1080Ti launch, which is if I recall correctly towards the end of this week, nVidia will lower the prices of their current cards as the new flagship drops the previous lines one slot down the order - the current 1080 will be priced closer to 1070, and the current 1070 will go down close to 1060 prices. With all the new graphics coming in, it's worth waiting a few more days.

In Australia, at the moment, the RX480s are about $350aud, the gtx1070s are about $650aud and the 3gb gtx1060's are about $350aud. I don't think the 1070s will drop that much in price.

The RX480 is a better option, and you can now get a RX480 8GB at almost the same price that a rx470 8gb. what resolution are gaming ?
