    Question I bought the Fx5200

Following on from threads a few weeks back, i decided to go against advice given by a few people and go for the Geforce Fx5200 instead of the Geforce 4 Ti4200. I have read that the 5200 is equal to a ti4800....please don't flame me anyone!!

This is gonna work on my motherboard ain't it??

    The CARD

...I have picked it up from dabs.com for about £75 (incl Delivery), quite pleased; couldn't really find it cheaper!

Where did you read that ? - its wrong.
    A ti4800 will wipe the floor with a fx5200.

And yes, it should work. The boards with only 2x AGP are the ones of which some had issues due to voltage swicthing problems.

    LOL @ Flame!

The ti 4800 is stated as being slower in a copy of PC Format...i know its wrong, u know it wrong; they r fools! My budget was to tight to get anything more, all i was after is an increase on what i have now - a geforce 2 MX

FX5200 gets a bad rep but it is superior to the Rad9200 and a very worthy replacement for the GF4MX range ... at least it can offer GF3 type speeds and with DX9 at least you now get DX8 too!

Even so it is way inferior to the GF4TI4200, in fact the GF-FX5600ultra and Rad9600PRO can often have problems keeping up with the GF4TI4200 so long as you avoid DX9 or medium to high AA+AF. Dabs have been selling (and still are) a GF4TI4200-8X 128MB for £75ish and that would have been a much better option. Still although FX5200 gets a bad rep it is still a decent card and a worthy bottom end offering.

the PCF numbers are not wrong, the card is technically faster, its just in real world situations (ie games) where the fx5200 is slower

Due to comments seriously roasting the Fx 5200 on almost every forum i have looked on. I have cancelled the order for it this morning and immediately sent the order out for a ti 4200. Now, if this don't boost performance significantly, i will be mad!

I don't know if this helps or not, but I can happily play Americas Army (UT2003 engine) at 1280x1024 on my 64mb GF4 ti4200 I picked it up for £53 from Insight UK (no longer there). I have a AthXP 2000+ (previously 1600+) so nothing stellar backinging it up.

The GF3 Ti is definitely better than a GeforceFX 5200 ....

The only advantage would be the price and the DX9 support

got my broters 5200 (abit suliro -fanless) from komplett for about £55 few weeks back

it plays CS ok, and has DVI/AGP/TVout, but i'd go for a 2nd hand 8500rad or a gf3 varient

GF3 isn't likely to be better than the GF-FX5200. The GF3 suffered terribly from poor '2D' image quality, did not standardise TVout, lacked Dual Display support and were poor for anything more than 2xAA (AF looked nice but was slow). So buying a GF-FX5200 (< £50 new) is in many respects preferable to a GF3 (£50ish 2nd hand?) esp the most common variant the GF3TI200. With the FX5200 you get big improvements in many areas esp AA+AF, DX9 (for what that's worth on a 'slow' card), '2D' IQ, TVout (or VIVO), dual display, 128MB as std and will surely get more for your card when you sell it on ... GF3 is sounding pretty old to most people. I'd still say the GF4TI4200 is easily the top 'budget' card by a long way though. There's simply too much variance on the 8500 series to make it a wise purchase and the 'newer' (inferior) Rad9000-9200 are inferior to the FX5200.

I bought a used Asus GF3 (Original, not Ti200/500) with the funky 3D glasses for my 2nd PC (PIV 2.4b) a few weeks ago. £30 from these forums I think - overclocks to 245/545 with no bother and plays UT2003 @ medium detail levels, 1024*768. A friend has a FX5200 in his XP2600 PC and IMO the GF3 is more powerful.

Just a thought has anyone got the time to compile a chart of the different graphics cards and there performance in top 10 i.e.
    9800pro
    9700pro
    5900ultra
    9600pro
    5600ultra
    e.t.c.

and then the moderators make it a sticky?

It's just confusing with all these different model numbers, hard to tell the difference sometimes!
