by the sound of your system any top end gfx card (6800gt/x800xt) is going to be cpu limited, you might think of buying a faster processor and a quality mid range card like an ati 9800pro of nvidia 6600gt or 6800 vanilla

    What sort of budget?

For CPU, I would go with AMD right now - they seem to perform better than the Intel equivalents. Socket 939 seems like a wise investment right now - fast CPUs and even faster CPUs in the future!

For RAM, I would choose at least 1GB. The decent budget sticks (Crucial, Corsair Value Select, etc.) are apparently only slightly slower (2/3%) than the more expensive stuff (e.g. Corsair XMS), so the more expensive stuff probably usn't worth it if you're not overclocking it.

For mid range graphics, I think a 6600GT is a better option than a 9800 Pro - the 6600GT seems to almost always faster, and only struggles at higher resolutions and AA.
