Windows 10 drivers for an old GeForce 7800 GTX

I have built up a PC using old spares including an nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX graphics card.

To remind you, back in 2005 it was a top of the range card. Obviously I am not expecting top performance in the latest games, but I am hoping to be able to play some casual games like minecraft at medium settings.

    http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphi...review/?page=3

The PC is running windows 10, and according to the nVidia website, no Windows 10 drivers are available.

A quick google search lead me to driverscape.com where they had some drivers that failed to install.

So who is telling the truth. Is it that the old card just won't work on a new OS, or are nVidia lying and the Windows 7 drivers will work if I can persuade them to install?

From what I can see looking around the NVidia forums is that card isn't supported by NVidia any more, hasn't been since 2015 now.

You could try the Windows 8 driver on Windows 10 and see if it works, if not you will be stuck with the basic driver that Windows installs for the card, the link I am adding is 64 Bit only and supports Vista, 7 & 8

Also found a vid on Youtube with links to working drivers :

Re: Windows 10 drivers for an old GeForce 7800 GTX

I recall that someone managed to get a 7000 series Geforce card working on Windows 10 by manually extracting the Win7/8 driver package and installing the driver manually via the "Have disk" menu. EDIT: <-- In the "Update driver" menu in device manager.

Only just picked up this thread. Interestingly, until recently I had an old PC with a 7800 GTO in, and I tried some gaming with that. My advice would probably be not to bother, in all honesty.

Obviously, if you can get it working and you don't have to spend any more cash that's all to the good, but tbh if you want to play games on Windows 10 I'd be seriously considering a new graphics card rather than trying to hack unsupported drivers just to use a card that's basically sub-entry level by modern standards. Passmark's GPU benchmarks reckon the lowly AMD HD 5450 - which is less than £30 - matches the 7800 GTX. My own comparisons suggest that's a little harsh on the 7800 - I reckon it's more like 50% faster than the 5450, but that still puts it at only half the speed of an R7 240, and a quarter of the speed of an RX 550. Good luck to you and all, but I honestly think a new GPU would be a worthwhile investment!

If you have some time on your hands and you really only want to play Minecraft, you could try installing Linux. Nvida might have abandoned the card but the open source community might do an OK job with the Nouveau driver.

Scary is right about the performance though, the 8800GT was a massive step change when it came out and pretty much obsoleted everything before it. Then cards got incrementally faster.

if you want to play Windows games, I would suggest a minimum of an RX460 (which it looks like you can still get for under £90): http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Componen...graphics+cards that would get you from DX9 to a DX12/Vulkan supported card.

Windows 7 drivers should be fine. Generally when you start up an installer all the drivers and what-not are extracted into your temporary directly. Lift the inf from there and install manually.
