Yeah it is and TBH the Vega56 makes more sense unless the price gets whacked past £400 due to miners. TPU places the air cooled Vega64 barely 10% faster than the Vega56 with a huge increase in power consumption.

    Edit!!

Re: Vega 56 and Vega 64 review thread

Nice to see some reviews using a Founders Edition 1080 as the comparison - it actually makes the stock Vega 64 look a bit better, and gives me a little hope for what partner cards might do. Unsurprising that the Vega 56 looks like the sweet spot card though - a few less shaders, slightly lower clocks, much lower power draw, much keener pricing...

Although talking of power draw, sticking the '64 into power saver mode does a remarkable job on constraining power consumption without hitting performance too much.

Wonder if XFX will managed to get hold of some golden chips and do a GTR version...

Re: Vega 56 and Vega 64 review thread

I am watching the DF review, and interestingly in many of the games especially during more intensive scenes the Vega56 seems to have noticeably better minimums(OK,not AC:U but kind of expected that).

    Edit!!

    The same thing seen here:

Re: Vega 56 and Vega 64 review thread

Could AMD actually be targeting the professional graphics card market with Vega and what we've seen so far is just slightly tweaked professional GPUs.

In a similar manner as they used the basic Zen microarchitecture and infinity fabric for everything from the 4 core R3 up to the 32 core Epyc, binned Threadrippers, and probably yet to be seen mobile and APU chips.

Almost definitely, if you look at the additional packed maths/new instructions/etc. that's gone into it. NVidia do the same, but they've got the R&D resources to *also* produce a gaming-focused version of the silicon which is more efficient and directly targeted at the gaming market.

AMD isn't doing this as some uber-strategy. It's doing it because it doesn't have the spare cash on hand to realistically produce multiple silicon variants just to boost market segmentation. They're serving their entire CPU market with a single die because that's all their current resources allow them to do. They're serving both professional graphics and gaming markets with a single GPU die because that's all their resources allow them to do. Unfortunately, single silicon doesn't scale as well in GPUs.

I'd love to see a pure gaming-focused RX Vega, but I guess that will depend a lot on how this round of sales pans out. I guess potentially they might think they can do enough tweaking to serve the whole market with a single architecture. I do wonder what would've happened if they'd gone wider instead of faster with this design...

Vega uses infinity fabric interestingly and IIRC AMD announced a number of accelerator cards using Vega as part of the Instinct ranges.

Re: Vega 56 and Vega 64 review thread

The Vega based professional cards are the Pro WX 9100 and Pro SSG, I'm struggling to find any comparison or benchmarks against Nvidia's professional counterparts (Quadro & Tesla) though, from a financial point of view it would certainly help AMD's bottom line to gain market share in the professional markets as there's much better markup in those markets.

If you teamed up a few MI6 or MI8 from the instinct range with a few SSG's on an Epyc Mobo and CPU with it's 128 PCIe lanes it would probably be an ideal system for a lot of data crunchers.

VEGA 56 I may get, seems right price/perf if I snag a highlighted deal at launch. Otherwise I'll stick to trusty Fury X with AIO, which again I only jumped on from Hawaii as promo price made swap cheaper then going WC on Hawaii.

Not sure if they are actually available yet,but not really looked hard. Apparently Navi adds more support for AI stuff, which sounds suspiciously like what Nvidia has been doing with some of its cards(tensor units).

TBF,look at the DF review,it makes me wonder if the Fury X had 8GB of VRAM how well it was doing. Its actually close to a GTX1070 in a number of games.

Not exactly a review but HotHardware tested the new "Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition Beta for Blockchain Compute" drivers and saw increases across to board, particularity with an overclocked V56.
