Decided on 6600GT.... But which one?

    Hello,

Right I've decided to replace my R9700Pro with a 6600GT. The question is, which one? There are loads of makes, editions, versions etc, so what are people's experiences?

Ones to steer well clear of? ones to go for?

Any advice would be much appreciated

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

i have the einfast A6600gt TDH, which was supposed to have the smallest and most quiet hsf on it, however it was no different from the standard ones. i replaced it with a zalman cooler it it works well.

its a relatively standard package, a few games etc.

only gripe is the hsf which was supposed to be different.

Despite the fact tat you've already decided to replace a 9700 Pro with a 6600GT, I would advise you not to. Although the 6600GT is faster than a 9700 Pro (and even a 9800 Pro), I don't think the performance increase would justify spending £140. The very least I would consider would be a vanilla 6800 (LOW do one for £170).

If you do still get a 6600GT, I would go for XFX since they have 1 ghz clocks (reference PCI Express memory speed is 1000 mhz, reference AGP memory speed is 900 mhz.)

    Hi,

Well the main reason I decided to do this was I suspect my 9700Pro is faulty. I do agree that the performance increase can't really justify the price, but I havent got the money to go for anything better. The main reason I decided against the vanilla 6800 is not some much the slight cost increase (which I probabally could stretch to) but the reported crap video engine. I've also heard that the 6600GT is faster than the 6800 if you can't unlock the 6800.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into the cards and makes you suggest.

    Regards,

    Mark

    Thanks for everyones feedback.

Well looking around and reading the reviews the XFX AGP one stands out from the crowd. Think I will go with that!

Anyone got one and can comment on it? I've read the reviews etc just wondered if there is anything wrong with it in anyway that hasent be pointed out.

with regards to the 6800's 'broken' video encoding thingy, how does this affect it re: encoding mpegs, DVDs etc and mpeg and DVD playback?

    Thanks

There is not alot of difference in speed between these cards. I would go with the MSI cause its got a huge bundle. I think that the msi does not use the normal heat sink but i may be wrong, look at the hexus review.

Yeah I did notice the nice bundle on the MSI, shame I've completed most of those games.

I haven't found any problem with playing DivX/XviD or DVDs - I think it was supposed to take the load away from the CPU, but doesn't. However, I've never found the CPU usage to be unreasonably high...
