    8-bit Z-Buffer @ ATI ?

is it possible to force 8-bit on ati cards ? (z-buffer depth)

The hardware doesn't support 8 bit z-buffers (nor colour buffers in 3d mode for that matter).

The hardware CANNOT do 8-bit z buffer on ATI OR nvidia, so no you can't force it because it cannot be done.
