    Question 19" Tft. E481s? E485s?

    Greetings

    I have a bit of money burning a hole in my pocket and I feel I should replace my current 17" Sony CRT, which was born in December 1999.

    Twin 17's would be nice, but for the short term I would rather have one large 19". I will use it a lot for films, and eventually for TV when I get the card.

    I was originally looking at the Iiyama 17" E431 because of its good reviews. Then the E435 came and I couldnt decide which one to get.

    Now I see that there is very little difference in money between the 17" E431 (£247 inc vat) and the 19" E481 (274 inc).

    Then there is the new 19" E485 that came out in December 2004 which is only £253 inc vat. This has 800:1 contrast and slightly faster response time...

    iiyama ProLite E481S

    Response time 25 msec ..............................................................................Lose
    Contrast ratio 400 : 1 typical ......................................................................Lose
    Brightness 250 cd / m² typical .....................................................................Lose
    Display colour 16.77 Million ..........................................................................Win

    Native resolution 1280 x 1024 (1.3 megapixels) / 75 Hz
    Input connector DVI-D, D-Sub 15 mini
    Ergonomics TCO 99, TÜV ERGO (ISO 13406-2), MPR III

    iiyama ProLite E485S

    Panel MVA ...............................................................................................Lose
    Response time 23 msec ..............................................................................Win
    Contrast ratio 800 : 1 typical ......................................................................Win
    Brightness 300 cd / m² typical .....................................................................Win
    Display colour 16,2 Million ...........................................................................Lose
    Viewing zone horizontal/vertical: 170°/170°; right/left: 85°/85°, up/down: 85°/85°
    Native resolution 1,3 MegaPixels (1280 × 1024)
    Input connector D-Sub mini 15 pin, DVI-D 24 pin
    Ergonomics TCO'99, TÜV-GS / MPRIII (prEN50279) / ISO 13406-2

    I've read reviews of the E481 and understand that it rates very highly. But I've seen no reviews on the 485.

    Advise on which is the better monitor, for £, would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Regards

    Mike

    XP2600+
    1024mb pc2700 (dont think I got 3200)
    All 100% stock.

    Edit - The other thing I was going to ask, is, should I experience much ghosting in games with either 25 or 23 ms? And would my gfx card be able to handle it at the native res okay ?? Ta.

    The 481 is the better buy as it has true colour, not just 16.2 mil which could result in colour banding.

    I doubt there's much difference between 23 and 25ms anyway.

    Ghosting may appear in fast paced games, you'd have to go and see one in action to see if it bothers you.

    Thanks Novelty

    Is the 800:1 contrast ratio on the 485 anything special ?

    Does anyone recommend any other 19" monitors for the similar price ? (Approx £280ish all inc)

    Thanks

    431's are only £179 from komplett:

    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=302834&cks=PRL

    i have one (and had 2 for a while) and love it, the 16.2 m colours hasnt been a problem for me yet

    19 would be nice, but i didnt think it was worth the extra as it is the same res and like you say 2 17's would be nicer in the long run.

    Thanks Noah !

    Bit confused, did you mean the 435? The 435 is the one with 16.2m colours, and the 431 has the full 16.7

    i'm afraid the 431 has only 16.2m colours, i thought it had 16.7m as well, but my user manual states 'display colours: approx. 16.2 million'

    hi Mikey,

    i would not get either of the monitors.

    instead get the excellent Dell Ultrasharp 1905FP 19" for £285
    http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...ctlisting.aspx

    It uses the same panel as the expensive Samsung SM 193P TFT Monitor which is £400+

    The Dell has excellent reviews across the Tech Internet sites and various forums.

    Dell:

    * Monitor size and type: : 19" (48.3cm) active matrix TFT
    * Resolution: : 1280 x 1024 (SXGA)
    * Response time / Brightness / Contrast Ratio: : 20ms / 250cd/m2 / 800:1
    * Dimensions h x w x d: : 420 / 550 (compressed / extended) x 415 x 217 mm
    * Weight: : 7.0 kg
    * Inputs: : Analogue / Digital
    * Height adjustable stand / Audio capability: : Yes (130mm travel) / Optional AS500 soundbar
    * VESA mounting compatible / Security slot: : Yes (100mm) / Yes
    * Integrated powered USB 2.0 hub: : 4 downstream / 1 upstream ports
    * Warranty: : 3 year next busness day exchange

    For this price range you are not going to get a better monitor with true 16.7 colours and viewing angles etc

    Hey Mikey, contrast ratio is a difficult thing because all it is is the amount of variations in contrast from darkest to lightest, this means the darkest colour could be a light grey and the lightest a piercing white. What you want is as dark a black as possible, once you have that a 350:1 contrast ratio is perfectly fine. If you read some reviews the 435 is reported as being quite grey as opposed to black.

    So a huge contrast ratio doesn't mean it's good. It's a big con i know!

    Hope to help

    Thank you everyone, very much appreciated

    Mak_attack - that Dell looks mighty fine . I'm just reading up on it now, it's certainly got some great reviews like you say! Superb specs, usb ports etc! I think it might be the one

    Cheers

    Personally Id go for the Hyundai L90+, but apparently its not too great for movie playback so it may not be exactly suited to you.

    Thanks rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishey

    Well after reading some good reviews on the Dell 1905 this morning, and then finding it for an incredibly low price, I decided to take the plunge and order it!

    Thanks again for pointing that Dell out mak!

    Hi Mikey,

    No problem. Glad to help. What incredibly low price did you find it for? (Hope it ain't Aria lol - only a 1 year return to base warranty vs Dell 3 year. Plus Dell allow you to return it with out much problems if it is defective)

    When you get it can you post a review?
    Can you please post some pictures of it in action and how it looks etc in real life etc?

    thanks,

    Hi Mak

    Lol, afraid so But at £230 all inc. it would have been rude to turn it down. I did realise it was only 1 year RTB warranty, but came to the decision the saving was too good. So fingers crossed I get a good one!! Nothing wrong with it though, says its just surplus stock...

    Yep I will definitely report back with a mini review and some pics. It should be here tomorrow anyway! by Sh1tylink

    Thanks again for your help

    no problem Mikey,

    i don't like putting people of, so sorry if i did.

    yes £230 is an excellent bargain
    With £55 saved you can spend on upgrading pc or getting a nice wireless keyboard and mouse

    i want this dell monitor so thats the reason i have requested a review and real life pics

    i either want one dell 19" or a 2 x 17" Dual Setup

    no problem in helping

    To be honest Mikey, I'd go for neither.

    I would opt for the Viewsonic VP912s (but that's just my opinion, obviously)
    12ms response time, pivot, tilt, pan and height adjustable. DVi and 2 Dsub inputs......it's all good!!!

    Jinx,

    Mikey goes "I will use it a lot for films, and eventually for TV when I get the card"

    The Dell has far better colour reproduction than the VS: 16.7 vs 262k --> 16.2
    Dell has far better viewing angles: 178 / 178 vs 160° horizontal / 160° vertical

    These would suit Mikey's purpose fine

    12ms response time - He not a hardcore gamer
    Pivot, Tilt, Height adjustable - Dell does that to
    DVi and 2 Dsub inputs - Dell has one of each which is plenty for his needs.

    thanks,
