    Has anyone else noticed....

How the performace:cost ratio is a lot worse on PCI-E cards over their AGP counterparts ?

For example, a plain 6800 is around £215 in PCI-E, while you can get them on AGP for ~£170.
And even then, stock is no where near AGP levels.
The effects of supply and demand, or just a premium for buying PCI-E ?
Either way, it seems we are loosing out, yet again, in the transition from one technology to another.

What about prices of 6600GTs? I thought they were cheaper on PCI-E since AGP versions need a bridge chip?

It's always gonna be the way pricing goes to an extent. As average consumers see PCI-E, get told that its twice as fast as AGP, and are then convinced to buy. We all know that is far from the truth but transistions in tech are a easy way for companies to make a quick buck.

Going on the prices from scan, it goes in favour of AGP or PCI-E based on which card you look at. Either way, it only seems to be a few quid.

The 6800 chips are now shipping with what seems to be Native PCI-E support, so i dont think the converter will play a major role for that line of cards either.

All new technology takes this hit- say NVIDIA ships 10,000 AGP cards - and only 1,000 PCI-E the PCI-E will have more costs.

Lets be honest - most of us (including me) still run AGP not PCI-E

What i want to know is - will the next gen cards - have AGP flavours too - or will the be PCI-E only (like the x850)

They probably will do but they may only produce mid range cards to encourage people to move to PCI-E.

Then again ATI havent made most of their new cards into AGP

Totaly agree that all new tech's will have a price hit, but with the cores supporting PCI-E, its not much more than a different PCB layout for each board over AGP now.
Obviously R&D has to be made up, but this is somthing would should happen over time, as the technology isnt going to fade out over night.
At the moment, PCI-E 6800's over the AGP's have around a £45 difference. Thats just shy of $85. Even when taking into account that its a new technology, at that price, it seems to me we are being done over.
$85 is a hell of a lot of money per card to be making due to the connector it uses.

The nforce 4's inability to run AGP cards will bring in PCI-E quicker for people in my eyes (im talking about system builders, not your average Joe pc-world/Dell buyer). I know VIA offers reasonable competition, but i can see more people going for nforce 4.

I hope that someone brings out a S478 board that has PCI-E onboard - would hate to have to sell my 3.2EE for some lesser intel chip if they dont bring out top of the line new AGP cards.
