    Question about the Nvidia 6800's "broken" vpu

    What exactly does this affect? I have read that the 6800 has a broken vpu.

    Would this affect me watching dvds, or mpeg/wmvs/divx movies etc on my pc? Or would it affect me encoding mpegs/wmvs/divx movies etc?

    If not, what does it mean and how will it affect me?

    thanks

    It means your CPU will have to do the decoding, which isn't too big a deal. However your CPU might cough a bit at high definition stuff.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Eh? I have a 6800, and mine seems to work fine. Do you have a source? Where did you get your information from?

    The problem is quite real. Let me find some links.

    http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2305

    Also it looks like the basic 6800 isn't as bad as some of the other models.

    Can you link me to the HD thing please because:

    a) I'd like to see my machine cough and splutter and
    b) I'd like to see HD video

    There's already a forum thread on this, as well as several other 'hundred page' threads on other fourms detailing the problem in depth. Doesn't seem much point in starting a new one but to answer your question very simply:-

    If you have a fast CPU (say 700mhz+), DVDs, WMVs, DivX will be fine because you can decode in software. If you're multi-tasking, you may have some residual issues but if you're playing the video as a stand alone application, you'll be fine (unless the video has been encoded in a non-standard way).

    The BIG problem are future formats particularly HD DivX and HD WMV (there are retail DVDs based on this format already). If these format take off, as they are likely to do in 2005 onwards, you PC will simply die - you could have 3ghz P4 with a £350 6800Ultra, and it will perform so badly with a 1080p video that it will be unwatchable. So much for future proof graphics cards.

    There is no hardware encoding.

    You can also assume that there's no hardware decoding either (unless you want to spend more money).

    Is there a way to get it to work? I've not tried it yet - it's downloading, but i'm going on the assumption it's not going to work.

    * I've read that thread above, but I don't believe it gives an answer.

    It doesn't give an answer, because there is no answer.

    It doesn't work, pure and simple.

    Oh wait, for another £25 you can supposedly enable partial MPEG2 decoding. That's right, a person with a 6800/GT/Ultra coupled with their 300mhz CPU requiring hardware decoding. Of course.

    I just downloaded something called "fridaynightlights", which I think is HD, and it seems to work fine. I'm going to try one from the microsoft site now:

    the like to the anandtech article above says that the 6800 nu is not affected by this problem, which is cool. I may well go for the 6800nu then

    Remember that this only applies to the NV40 (GeForce 6800GT/Ultra AGP) and NV45 (GeForce 6800GT/Ultra PCIe), NV41 (GeForce 6800) has fully function WMV9 decode acceleration.
    p.s. nv41 is pci-e only i think, 6800nu agp are still NV40

    I think part of it is down to the fact that HD stuff takes huge amounts of processing power... so that means that even todays decent cpus stuggle with it.

    It really is something for the future.

    I've played 2 perfectly. Since you and me have the same spec PC, I'd have thought you should be able to play them too.
