MSI ti4200 128mb vs Leadtek WinFast A250 TD

My fan has gone on my ti4200, and tbh it was running like a dog on CS:S. My mate has offered me the Leadtek WinFast A250 TD for 40 pound. Could u tell me if its worth the money, and what kinda of performance increase it will have on source. Or any other cards u recommend for 40 quid max!!

    Thanks all

    Eh???

    1. The Leadtek is a Ti4400.
    2. Performance gains over your card are minimal.
    3. You could those levels of performance just by overclocking your Ti4200.
    4. £40 is a rip off.
    5. Buy a new fan.
    6. For £40 you're not going to see much of a performance increase.

The old Leadtek I have is a Ti 4200, I have an one stashed here, collecting dust.
But I agree, not worth paying for such old gear that won't give much performance.

As for GFX for around £40: erm... dont bother

Something like a 9700 Pro from OcUK would set you back £67+vat and change your gaming world completely

Lower budget - but you should still get an improvement - would be a 256MB 9550 from Connect at the same store which is around £45+vat and the same goes for a 128MB 5700LE

If you look at Doom 3 scores around 1024x768 with high quality and 8xAF then the 9700 Pro will pull in well over 30fps...

...with the other 2 - hitting 30fps would probably require dropping the AF off altogether and maybe even looking at dropping resolution or quality settings

'Older' games like Unreal Tournament 2004 will give you a bigger boost and you should clear 30fps with both of these cards when running 1024x768 at high quality with 4x/8x

Bear in mind that the rest of your system will also play a part in your final performance levels PLUS you also need to think about how long this upgrade should last you

If you are looking at a temporary stop-gap and you will not want to play HL2 etc at high-res...

...then a little over £40 will get you some pretty decent frame rates

However, as the latest games come through - you will still be looking at the lower resolutions/quality settings/AA-AF levels to get anything like playable rates

    Your options seem to be:-
    - Live with it - I'll get a new system for £399 somewhere later on this year
    - Get a card for just over £40 that will give me a measurable improvement immediately - but not massive
    - Double the amount you want to spend and get a 'pretty serious' card that will play the games that you through at it - but not at 1600x1200 with 4x/8x
    - Double your RAM (borrow a chip from a friend first !) to see if that helps
    - Go the whole hog - sell your existing kit and upgrade the whole thing immediately

    Good luck whatever you choose

Thanks for your help Andrzej. Very helpful!!

This is jsut a stop gap for the summer when i build a new rig. I only want to be able to play css without fps lag, it doesnt matter how poo it looks cause i know my comp is poo My other specs are as follows:
    2100 Athlon
    512 DDR
    60gig hd
    17 Flat

Ok i wont bother with the 4400 as it does seem a little dear. Is worth going to ebay for something like this. I saw 9600xt's going for 40 ish pound. Or do u still recommend going for something more reliable like a internet shop?

Not a bad card - but be aware that a 9700 Pro or 5900 will be in a different class performance wise so - if you can get one of these second hand - then your performance really will push up significantly

(just be aware of the differences in image quality in cards from that generation though... http://graphics.tomshardware.com/gra...e_6800-45.html)

Can't imagine it will be a problem - as long as you have an AGP slot (ideally 8x)

Have a look at this site: http://www.retekdirect.co.uk/
the listed prices are probably compleatly wrong, as it says onthe front page, call them.
They used to have a lot of bargains on there, refurbished stock... I got 3x9500np's for £35 each iirc, and just like my old 9700 they hit 450mhz on core (watercooled ofcourse).
