No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone could help.
My computer was working fine up until yesterday, I turn on the pc and now no longer get a display out from my graphics card.
I have tired all the connecitons from the card to the monitor DVI, HDMI and DP.
When I remove the graphics card and plug the monitor directly into my motherboard to use integrated graphics I get a signal.
Has anyone had this issue before?
Is my Graphics card dead?
Just wondering if I need to buy a new graphics card.
Thanks for reading.

Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
Sounds ominous. Does the 'signal' allow you to access Device Manager, because you could disable faulty card.

Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
Hi, welcome to HEXUS.
What make is the graphics card? Had you done anything to the PC configuration? Depending on the motherboard, can you try the graphics card in another slot? Can you try the card in another computer?

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply.
When I use the integrated graphics the pc boots into windows and I can get in to device manager. (Graphics card removed).
However if I have the graphics card in the PCIE slot I can not get a signal from either the graphics card or the motherboard integrated graphics.

Hi Peterb,
Thanks for your response and warm welcome.
The graphics card is a HD 7950 3gb, I have not done any adjustments to the card since installing it into my secondary pc.
The pc was working fine a few days ago and the last thing I did was play CSGO on the pc.
I turned on the POC today and can't get a signal :(

Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
It isn\'t looking good for the card - but you need to try it in another PC to be sure.
-
Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
Since the card is well out of warranty, it might be worth taking the cooler off and seeing whether there\'s any obvious signs of damage - bulging capacitors, scorch marks around VRMs etc.
Which PSU do you have in your secondary PC? If it\'s a cheap no-name one, it might\'ve damaged the graphics card...
-
Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
Have you tried other gpu outputs?

Thanks for the suggestion MrJim.
I'll remove the cooler later today and report back, will probably give it a clean and replace thermal paste and pads too.

I have tried all the connections on the graphics card and do not get a output.
I know it is not my monitor and may cables as they work with my main PC.
Just the graphics card isn't dead :(

Update*
Removed card from pc, took off cooler and everything looks normal.
No obnvious signs of damage i.e. blown capcitors...
Clean dust out of heatsink with compressed air, remove old thermal paste and replaced with new.
The heatsink on my card only had contact with the GPU and there were no thermal pads to replace.
Put the card back together and tired the card in another PC in two different PCIE slots.
Still not getting any signal but fans spin :(
Is there anything else I should check before calling it a day?

I think you should post a pics of the card for the internet hive mind to diagnose. Dead gpus suck but the gpu used market price is okayish atm so you should be able to get a decent replacement for not insane money.

Any suggestions for a cheap second hand card to play esports titles like CSGO, overwatch, LOL and Fortnite?

Do you have a budget, and how fast did you find your last card?
From a look at benchmarks, a 7950 is about as fast as an R9 380 or on the Nvidia side a GTX 960. If you want to buy new, that means your old card is about as fast as a 1050ti. That's awkward on the AMD side, the Rx 560 is slower and cheaper, the RX 570 is a lot faster and more expensive.
Given I wouldn't want to spend money on a 2GB video card these days, if you want new a £150 4GB 1050ti is probably the sweet spot. https://www.amazon.co.uk/NVIDIA-GeFo...dp/B01MFBKRI5/
Depends whether you want something faster or cheaper than your old card though.

It depends if you want to remain on team red or green. If you want to stay on team red I think a r9 380 would last you a long time and a decent used one can be found easily for around 90ish online. If you want to go team green, I recently found a gtx 960 for 80 and you could probably get it for a similar price on ebay or locally to you on gumtree. Both of these were based on the 500w recommended psu for you 7950 so you should be ok.
-
Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
If the PSU is failing then its quite possible the graphics card won't be getting enough power,or even has taken out the graphics card as usually it is the most power hungry part of a gaming PC.

This PSU was a recent upgrade to the secondary pc to run the HD 7950 so only 6months old (PSU purchased new).
Are there any obvious signs I should look out for on a failing PSU?

Thanks both for the suggestions.
I think I'll have a look at the used markets 80 for a gtx 960 would be perfect.

Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
Told you it sounded ominous. RIP HD 7950 3gb. I've started investing in long term guarantees(or whatever they are called), it's worked out so far.

Whereas if something fails, I just buy a replacement from the hundreds I saved by not bothering with long term guarantees :D

AFAIK,I don't think it is the best PSU in the world, but unless you have a dodgy example of one,its more likely the graphics card is failing.
You would need to use a multi-meter to check the molex and power connector outputs.

I would make sure it is a GTX960 4GB and not the 2GB version though!

Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
This might be interesting if you are going second hand, the 280X is a rebrand of the 7970 so a bit faster but comparable with the one that has now shuffled off it's mortal coil whine. This review has the 280X in some (not all) of the benchmarks which include the 960 and 380 cards presumably as they were all cards people might want to upgrade to a 470 which it is actually a review of:
https://www.tomshardware.co.uk/amd-r...w-33625-3.html
Usually the 960 is the same performance as the 380, occasionally the 380 wins big on DX12/Vulkan supported titles. For now I'm still on the 380, it just about struggles to cope with a VR headset.

Not having heat sinks on the ram, not good but not always the end of the world.
Not having a heatsink on the VRM . . .
I get the feeling that it might of cooked itself, is hard to know though.
What make/brand & model is it?

Swings and roundabouts. With some products like audio you can get cover and they give you back the premium. I just think with some components, actually just the graphics card, it's worth having the cover. They seem to have a highish failure rate, and the company replaces it with the latest equivalent model for five years. Whatever works.

I managed to pick up a "New" RX 460 2gb a few months back for around the £70 mark which I didn't think was too bad. If you want used with a warranty maybe check out some used cards from CEX. Its all i see from "Budget gaming youtubers"

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look at both GTX 960 4GB and R9 280x to see which I can get a better deal on.

Thanks Adrian! CEX prices seem fair as they offer a 24month warranty on second hand graphics cards.
I think 70 was a good price on a New 460 2gb as it has warranty :)

I had the same problem after installing a different video card.
I went up on UTube and tried something that was used on someone's computer and it was this.
1. Unplug the power cord.
2. hit the push the start switch until all the compositor's are depleted.
3. remove the small battery on the motherboard for about 2 minutes.
4.reinstall the battery.
5. hold the start switch for one (1) minute.
6. Plug the power cord back into the computer.
7. Push start switch and see if you get a picture?
It worked for me.

Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
I will recommand you to update your graphic card driver with latest version .

Re: No display out on graphics card... is my graphics card dead?
Have you looked in the BIOS to check what the primary output is? It sounds like the BIOS thinks the iGPU is the default which might be why that works and the dGPU doesn't. Obvs if the card doesn't appear in the BIOS it's dead though.
