    The World's First 512MB X850

It was only yesterday that we exclusively brought you news of a 512MB GeForce 6800 Ultra from Gainward. Today, it's ATi's turn, with a Radeon X850 boasting the very same capacious amount of graphics memory. HEXUS has obtained shots of the new card:

512mb of onboard video ram seems to much considering you can get sli making it 1024 i cant see any game in the enar 5 years rquiring all that ram. doom 3 can and has run on ultra quality on radoen 9700, 9800.. and hgiher and on comparable nvidia chipsets. having more video ram doesnt eman better performance, it might acutally degrade performance as the gpu has to handle 512 mb or textures instead of 256

I'd rather have a faster GPU... they can keep that extra 256....

Correct me if I'm wrong but won't higher onboard ram allow for larger maps?

Doom 3 has a setting that needs 512MB ram, but thats the only game i can think of.

Just looks like another videocard for the stinking rich to buy.

Is it me or are all the new videocards ridiculously priced at launch, and are taking over a year to get to price levels that are affordable for the average PC joe.

I have been in this industry since before the invention of the PC (starts rocking slowing on porch swing as grandchildren gather round on a warm afternoon in the deep south)

The first products out always cost more because of the immense cost of R&D

It would be interesting to know if the 'absolute' cost of products has actually gone up over the years

My first proper PC had a stunning spec: 16MHz 386, 2MB ram, 20MB HDD, Mono screen and a resolution measured in the number of characters that could be displayed on a line - not pixels !

My first proper PC also had a stunning price: £2,199 inc vat

Was it a turbo-priced top name brand ?

    Nope.

This was an 'own brand value model' purchased from Morgan Computers with a bank loan !

The first time you make anything, it will be an expensive business

There is the old adage that the cost of producing the second capsule of a new type of 'aspirin' will cost 1 penny...

...but the first one off the production line actually cost $200M

Can anyone remember what the original Voodoo 5000 and 8500DV cards etc sold for in the shop when they first came out ?

I paid £200 for a Matrox Millenium II 250 complete with a massive 8MB of dual ported WRAM and no 3d capability whatsoever. That coupled with the over £100 for my Voodoo 3DFX means that i spend £300 to get good graphics and that was on top of the large amount of cash the rest of the system cost 233MMX, 64MB ram, 10GB HDD i think it was.

My god was it worth it just to double click on glquake.exe

Not yet, but if we said that with everything computer related, things would progress very, very slowly.
