    Need a 19" TFT...

What's the best around? Will be used for gaming and general use, but not sure if I'l be watching DVDs on it.

    Cheers,

Hyundai ImageQuest L90D+. See Toms Hardware Guide for a recent article on 19" gaming monitors. It came top of the ones that were tested. I use it for gaming and it's fine. I've also watched DVD's on it and they play perfectly well. It's rated at 8mS but I would take that with a pinch of salt!

I don't think it's a proper 16.7m colour panel but i've done a bit of photo editting on it using high-resolution photographs and PaintShop Pro/Photoshop Elements and was not able to tell whether it was faking 16.2m colours using 6-bit RGB (262K colour palette) or whether it was a proper 8-bit RGB panel.

It's got integrated PSU and looks okay (silver/black).

For the price it's not bad. Another one I would consider is the Viewsonic VP912s - I think it costs a bit more than the L90D+ but it's a proper 16.7m colour panel. The panel is rated at 12mS.

What about the BenQ FP937S+. I got the impression from the article that it would have come out no.1 if it had sold in the US?

Also, are the Hyundai and the BenQ better or worse that the Viewsonic?

I'm not too bothered about DVDs, as I have numerous 32" TVs and DVD players in the house, so I'm more bothered about the gaming side of things.

Cannot comment on the BenQ. I've actually got the L90D+ and have been using it for several weeks and am more than happy with it. It's got both VGA and DVI inputs. The screen can be rotated and is height adjustable - something that I did not realise the value of to help with posture!

I'd be interested to hear comments from someone that actually has the BenQ.

My personal opinion is that the Viewsonic VP912s is better than the Hyundai but i've not seen one in action - just from spec. It does have a slightly slower panel on paper.

See ... My money would be banked on a Sony since their X-Black tech is literally the dogs balls. IMHO, the price premium is well worth it, especially on a large display. Although Sony lacks sub 16ms response times, I doubt anyone will notice any difference at 16ms or anything below that anyway.

In the end I went for the LG L1980U

It was slightly more expensive than the Hyundai, but has a great rating and looks really nice to.

    Should be great!

Check out the review of LCD displays in this month's PC Pro:

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/126/17in.../products.html

Also, if you are going to use the monitor for word processing, or general editing, then I would recomend one that you can rotate to portrait mode. I work as a programmer, and I keep the LCD monitor on my desk in portrait mode most of the time.

Talking Forget 19, go 21inch tft

I strongly recommend the Samsung 213T-Black, its absolutely fantastic in every respect, DVI/VGA , Portrait/Landscape 1600x1200 and very easy to move about but also a strong build quality and a feeling that it will last. It was expensive (about 500quid) but Im so glad I spent the extra money, Id never use anything less than 21 now!

Something I have realised since having got this monitor (25ms) is that response times are not the most important factor for big tfts.. I used to have a woeful Geforce FX5600 and even when the frame rate was high (i.e 60fps near monitor refreshrate) I still got quite considerable "ghosting", but a few weeks back I got an ATI x800 XT PE , which to say the least is an absolute revolution in game performance for me.

Anyway the ghosting is gone and in games like farcry and doom3 I dont even notice its a TFT (perhaps this is coz Im so busy gawking at the stunning effects!).

It seems to me that the quality of the graphics card is actually a much larger factor than most ppl realise. Why the graphics card should have such a marked impact on "ghosting" I am not sure maybe someone has some ideas.

Hi tom deloford would that tft you quoted be a 19in or 21in with a res of 1600x1200.

Hey, I hadn't noticed any replies, sorry.

It's brilliant. I was stunned by it's looks when I took it out of the box, it is truly stunning, and massive for a 19" aswell. Bigger than my other one. It can be twisted portrait to, and the stand is nice and sturdy.

It performs great too, and I don't have any complaints. I think I made the right choice, I would recommend it.
