Question Which LCD - Sony or Sharp?

I need a bit of advice here, I've read pretty much every 17" LCD monitor review out there (and there's a few...) and basically narrowed what I'm looking for down to the Sharp LL-172G or the Sony SDM-74. But, of course, I can only buy one and can't choose between them. Does anyone here have any experience with either (or perhaps the previous Sony SDM-73)?

Seems to be a bit of varation in reviews for the Sharp, actually; some say its excellent, others I've seen reckon it's 'mediocre'. Both using the same DisplayMate tests, too

Thanks for any insight (wooo first post! )

Samsung 712n is a great bargain and great for games. 600:1 contrast and 12ms response time. Can't beat it for a 17" LCD gaming monitor.

Sharp tfts are the best available (or one of them)

Sony's are over priced low quality screens (compared to sharp) they are comparatively average!). Sharp are masters (i.e. specialists) at making lcd screens, read it anywhere.

What I've read suggests that Sharp actually just use an LG-Philips panel. Of course there's plenty of good reviews for both out there, but I have seen bad reviews of the sharp, but not of the sony screen.

The Sharp is brighter than the Sony (300 vs 250cd/m2), but the Sony has greater contrast (500:1 vs 450:1 for the sharp). I don't know which would be more important to me, I would have thought greater contrast would be of more significance.

I'd personally go for a Samsung, but regardless of the brand (there are only a few LCD screen manufacturers who supply to the market and are then rebadged), I would check the dead pixel warranty and accept nothing less than a zero dead pixel replacement guarantee.

Some of these so called warranties are ridiculous. The dead pixel must either be on or off, must be a certain distance apart, and a certain number before they will replace it.

If a manufacturer doesn't have faith and support in it's product, it doesn't say much for the quality or reliability.
