X800 Pro temp sensor?

I have a Powercolor X800 Pro AGP jobby and I was wondering if it's meant to have an onboard temperature sensor that can be interrogated, or is this only on the XT version of the board?

A colleague here thinks that it should be on there and the temp visible in the driver properties, but I've tried the Omega drivers based on Cat 5.1 and the new ATI Cat 5.3 with no such option.

XP SP2 / Cat 5.3 / AGP X800 Pro with stock BIOS & settings


Also, is there a quiet but reliable fan to replace the stock one easily for the X800 range? Really makes a racket when it kicks in :/

I use ATItool to check my gfx card temps.You can have it showing your cards temps permanantly in your sys tray.You can control your fans speed with it as well.I've put a Vga silencer on my x800.It's massive though.Very quiet but very big.

Whilst we would love you to stay loyal to your ATI cooler - and cannot comment on warranty issues etc with taking your kit apart...

Also...

"...The temperature sensor we use is not on the core, it is a seperate chip that sits on the PCB underneath the fan of the heatsink... ...the sensor reads the temp from underneath the cooler, a different cooler may has its hotspots elsewhere... ...so it probably won't work at all"

Big should not be a problem, the HP case is decent size and I've become bored of SFF PCs for the reason of heat & noise ;)
Thanks, ATITool lets me know the temp (once I enable it in the menu) - kind of weird that the drivers don't report the temperature in Display/Properties or in the Catalyst control panel thingy.

Ta muchly, I shall bear it in mind to take any temp readings post-fan mod with a pinch of salt, and that VGA Silencer sounds like just the ticket.

any idea what software accesses this probe? I have looked throughout the control panels for the the temperature of my X800XL and can't find any reference to temp.

ATITOOL - doesn't support it yet either

If I was to ever take the stock PASSIVE heatpipes off my XL, then I'd use a zalman VGA flower cooler.

v quiet and pretty damn efficient
