Question Best modern card to upgrade old PC?

I'm looking to upgrade an older PC for my kids while the schools are out. What would you recommend as the best graphics card to pair with an old Sandybridge chip?

I've got an i7-2700k @4.5GHz in an ASUS P8Z68-VPro/gen3 and I'm looking for something that will drive good 1080p FPS gaming but not something so powerful that the old board & CPU will end up bottlenecking it.

What is wrong with your GTX980TI?? I had a GTX1080 with my old Xeon E3 1230 V2/Core i7 3770 and it didn't seem so bad,but after I did a stop-gap upgrade to a Ryzen 5 2600,games did seem to be smoother,ie,better minimums even if averages were not much better. However this was a 1440p,I expect at 1080p the CPU will be a bigger consideration for fast paced FPS games, and to get a big upgrade over a GTX980TI,especially an overclocked one which is close to a GTX1070,you will need at least a RTX2070 to get a 33% improvement or an RTX2070 Super to get closer to 50% or thereabouts:

I would personally look at the games you are playing and see whether they are more CPU bound or GPU bound.

My 980Ti is still driving my main PC and will be for the forseeable future! This is to go a second machine.

Rather than looking for a second-hand 900-series card I was looking for recommendations for a modern card that wouldn't be OTT for an almost 10yo CPU

Re: Best modern card to upgrade old PC?

1650 super is the cheapest 1080p-ish card right now (some newest titles will need a couple of settings turned down to hit 60 fps, but it'll play everything modern handily). The AMD competitor is the 5500XT, but that's not ideal - AMD skimped on the PCIe bus width (only 8x rather than 16x on the 1650 super), so performance on the 4GB version is lacking as it's slowed down whenever it needs to go to system memory. The 8 GB version helps to alleviate this, but costs almost as much as a much faster 1660 super (~£30 more than a 4 GB model or a 1650 super). One thing to watch out for is the 1650 non-super, it's a completely different model and sucks (the only reason to buy it is if you can only fit a half-height GPU in your case, or if your PSU doesn't have any PCIe power connectors). Decent 1650 supers start at ~£150 (assuming you're UK based).

The next step up worth considering is the 1660 super, starting around £215. The list of games that will need reduced image quality settings to hit 60 fps drops a bit, but the 1650 super will be on high/ultra settings already so not a huge difference.

Finally, the 5600XT is a fairly large step up over the previous two for ~£255 for the cheapest models. This'll be verging on decent 1440p gameplay in modern titles, so probably overkill for your purpose, but will not have any trouble at 1080p.

As a final point of reference, the 1650 super should be within 10% or so of your 980ti in 3dmark time spy while a 1660 super should beat it

I'd probably be picking something up from https://forums.hexus.net/retail-ther...ics-cards.html in your situation. Not the most recent but lots of bang for buck!

Re: Best modern card to upgrade old PC?

    Hello All,

I built this PC when the AMD 200 series first came out. I have not bought any additional parts. Basically I am looking to play the latest games. I purchased squad and I am forced to play it on low with 40 fps or less. The game spikes. Arma also lagged insanely hard when I first built the PC. I currently am scared to purchase new games because of this.

    Current System

Graphics card: BIOS Part Number 113-1E27100-O48 (Sapphire R9 270X 2G)
Processor: CPU Type AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor 3.5 GHZ
    Motherboard: M5A99FX Pro R2.0
    RAM: GSkill 2 x 4GB DDR3 1866
    Power Supply: Rosewell 630 Watts

    My monitor is a 2420Z 60HZ BenQ

I am not the most computer savy so I did not go in and overclock the CPU or GC

Basically Squad, Total war, and Arma don't look great. I am happy with playing at 1080 but would like to max out everything while playing online. I want it to be plug and play and not have to overclock.

My usual goto budget card is an RX 570 if you can find one. But right now prices and availability are all over the place.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-...dp/B06Y64PV2X/

That needs an 8 pin PCIe power connector, and a decent 450W PSU or better to drive it.

I have a sandybridge chip and I just upgraded my card to the rx590, I got a good deal on one for £140 so it was a steal. Depending what your budget is the Nividia gtx 1660 super is a good option too
