Re: What is your most fondly remembered GPU that you have previously owned?

I've had so many! My first true gaming card was a 4MB Guillemot Maxi Gamer 3D back in the day (3dfx Voodoo 1). I had some oddball cards including the old ATI Rage Fury Maxx and even Intels first dedicated gaming card which was the Intel i740.

The Nvidia GT 7600 (Galaxy model) was a bargain GPU at the time for the performance it delivered. I had a HIS Radeon 7950 IceQ was great at the time as it ran extremely quiet and cool with decent performance.

I've had quite a few decent cards and a few odball, underrated or outright terrible cards too!

Both were AMD's and they were the XT9800 and the 5990 but last couple of cards have been with team green.

Re: What is your most fondly remembered GPU that you have previously owned?

Well after things like a S3 Virge (4MB), I finally got a second-hand Orchid Righteous 3D. Wow, what a world changer, definitely the most significant graphics card for me.

    • ~1997: Orchid Righteous 3D 4MB (Voodoo)
    • ~1999: InnoVision Voodoo 2 12MB (Twelve! So overpowered).
    • Not sure if I had anything else before:
    • 2000: Creative 3D Blaster GeForce 2 GTS 32MB
Had a fan on it! Which you had to oil every now and then. This was build with a 1GHz AMD Thunderbird which I had saved for ages for to play Black & White on. The game turned out to be rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish, and the AMD was binned a year later for being an unstable platform (frequent crashing, most likely to be the Via chipset).
    • ~2003: Creative GeForce 4 Ti4600 128MB
ti was in the wrong place in those days. Top of the range baby, this was probably my favourite card after the Voodoo, finally kippered due to replacing the heatsink, poorly
    • 2003: Creative Blaster FX5900 128MB £210.00
Replacement for the Ti4600 that I fried after about 6 months. Whilst this one was a lot cheaper, the performance gap was massive, and I learnt the important lesson here, next gen pimps top-end previous gen at a lower cost.
    • 2006: Gainward 7800GS+ 256MB £249.99
This was an interesting card as it was a 7900GT on an AGP connection (my motherboard didn't support PCIe), and not a 7800 as the label suggested. About as high-end as I could get.
    • 2008: XFX GeForce GTX 260 (216) 896MB £223.512
Still had the included "busy gaming" door handle card kicking about until very recently. This bad boy took up 2 expansion slots! What a world! This was bought at the same time as that stunning chip, the Intel Core i7-920 "Nehalam"
    • 2011: Gigabyte 560 Ti 1GB, x2 SLI £167.04 each (£334.08 split over a year)
Mid-life upgrade to my x58 build. 1GB was too little, it cause me no end of problems. But one card is currently in the mrs' computer, and another in the old man's. Still going strong.
    • 2014: EVGA 970 SC 4GB, x2 SLI £269.99, £218.60
Bought along with my shift to X99 and an Intel Core i7-5930K "Haswell-E". The 960 which would have been the logical next wasn't quite doing it, so I coughed up the extra £50 and got a 970 for an eye-watering £270. This generation was eeexxxpensive. I picked up another one about a year later.
    • 2019: MSI Armor 1070 Ti 8GB £210
There was no way I was going to buy a 10 series card, the prices were insane, like almost double. This one was second hand, a temporary card, I bought one for £200 last summer off fleabay, and sold my two 960s for £100 each. On paper, the performance was about the same, but actually in many games the 1070 was noticeably smoother, probably due to the doubling of available RAM (SLI doesn't sum your ram as both cards have to hold all textures). I then had to wait a month for:
    • 2019: PowerColor RedDragon 5700XT 8GB £390
£390! Absolutely insane money. And what a load of crock it was, my review and experience of the terrible after-sales support of Scan is here: https://forums.hexus.net/graphics-ca...xt-review.html. Needless to say, it went back and my credit card company beat the money out of Scan.

And that's where I am now, stuck back on my £200 1070Ti which is doing very well. I had intended to pick up a second hand 2070 Super, but with the prices going the way they are, I might get something beefier. Whilst my experience of the 5700 XT has sworn me off AMD GPUs for life, I'm waiting until RDNA2 launches to see if it has an impact on nvidia prices. If I can pick up a 2080ti for under £400 I'd be please with that.

Nvidia 9500 on a Core 2 Duo setup. Was a decent card back in the day for playing Warcraft and other minimal games.

Recently, GTX 1050Ti. Price to performance beast. Got it a year after its release for a mega cheap price.

Yes! I was going to post the 6600GT. This is my first post since around the time I sold it to someone on here about 13 years ago! I think I installed an aftermarket passive cooler on it but yeah, those were the days!

Probably my Radeon 7970 which I bought when bitcoin mining was just becoming a thing. Ended up mining 1BTC which I sold for like $300 to pay the card off. Thought I was so smart. Never mined anything else after that.

ATI Radeon 9800 PRO top end graphics card at the time. I paid around £90. Imagine that price today.

Denise in the A500 was a beauty. 12 bit colour space? Astonishing. Left the consoles in the dust.

XFX r9 270x. My first discrete GPU bought in 2014 and still in use today (will probably replace with 6800xt). It was my first proper introduction into high resolution / high fps gaming, had 0 issues and always ran like a champ. Will always hold a special place in my heart.

Intel i740. Was my first computer and my dad paid around ?£1300? 20 years ago. Pentium II 350mhz I believe.

Sapphire HD3850. Got it in the US on vacation when dollar was low and pound was high. That thing was loud though

Re: What is your most fondly remembered GPU that you have previously owned?

290x, was my first actually powerful GPU. uncle gave it to me after he was done with BTC mining, so the card had gone thru a bit, i had got a corsair HG10 for it and honestly, that thing sucked, it had no vrm cooling. i later got a 390x Double dissipation cooler for it and the thing carried on, i had also done some pretty aggressive clocks on that GPU alongside my 4690k. until i thought it died when my PC kept black screen crashing but it turns out my RM750 was the issue, i had already got a 1070 by that time and i sold the 290x at the peak of the ETH boom for way too much.

My MSI lighting gtx 770, what a card it was. Used it until the 980ti came out and gave it to a family member where it just recently died after many years of service. RIP

Re: What is your most fondly remembered GPU that you have previously owned?

I only remember GPUs by the games that I was playing on them at the time

VideoLogic Kyro II - Deus Ex! So that card is guaranteed a place in my all-stars list (It was also a good card tho!)

I remember the nV GTX 460 for being an absolutely fantastic value-for-money offering. £150 for a card that ate everything I threw at it. You wouldn't get that kind of value today!

1st ever 3D GPU - Guillemot Maxi Gamer 3D (Voodoo 1) - can only remember playing Quake 1 on it... was a super long time ago tho
    https://thandor.net/object/112
Strange I can remember it by the box still...

Won't bore you with my entire GPU history. I think the first one I mentioned - the GTX 460 - is my most fondly remembered.
Closely followed by Deus Ex (Enjoy your reinstall, folks)
