Ati or Nvidia

Just wondering which card performs better the Ti4200 or the ati 9600 both 128mb cards. i know they are now where near top of the line but both will be a huge jumb from the 16megs of video mem i have on my laptop.. 1 more question... Ram any one have ne experince with Hyper-X just wondering if its worth it.

The Ti cards are only DX8 compatible. If you want DX9 on an NVIDIA you need a Geforce FX. Out of the two, go for the ATI 9600, Pro if you can afford it

Rad 9600 is a dx9 card, the ti4200 isnt. Basically if you want to play hl2, the 9600 is the best option as its alot better .

the 9600 is less then $130 on pricegrabber.. they are within about 5 bucks of one another

the Ti4200 isn't a directX9 card, it will work with directX9 games, but won't be able to utilize all their features. the Ti4200 is a bit faster in most older games but from the very early benchmarks of HL2 the 9600 is considerably faster, they are only early benchmarks though, and things can change. i personally would go for the 9600, preferably the Pro version.

i've not used Kingston HyperX myself but it's supposed to be top quality stuff

Sadly the the Geforce 4 Ti series do not support DX9. Where as the Radeon does.
I recently moved from Nvidia to ATI, as you expect both cards have there qerks, but im happy with my 9700pro

i wish i could get the 9800... but my wife would murder me... i guess i have to weigh the options spend $300 buck on the 9800 or sleep on the couch... tuff choice = )

a dx9 card will rule when opengl1.5/2 comes out and games start using them... i went with ati partially cos they claim the existing cards will fully support both. nvidia havent made such claims and tbh, they didnt really stick to well with there dx9 claims...

I had trouble with my 9700 pr0 running battlefield 1942. as the engine is built mainly for nvidia. so the ti4800 being my choice because of more compatability with the battlefield engine.

A little performace loss from my 9700 pr0 but nothing noticable for much better reliability.

as this was about 6 months ago. im not sure about the state of ati and battlefield. im guessing its problably improved quite a bit.

but there were alot of texture issues when i had my radeon.
but thats just one game.

The FX5200 is easily the better card, the 9200 is a 9000nonPRO and that's way slower than the 9000PRO which in turn is way slower than the original 8500. The FX5200 is still pretty poor though, FX5600 is a much wiser bet, perhaps 9600nonPRO if you're happy to o/c. However the GF4TI4200 (£60-75) is easily the best budget option, you can sell it on when DX9 is needed as the mid-range DX9 offerings from both ATI and nVidia have been very disappointing since 9500PRO was axed. If you hate upgrading your gfx card then 9600PRO is easily the best choice unless you can find a 9500PRO or 9700 which are way faster than all the current mid-range options. FYI the 9600PRO and FX5600ultra are only as fast in pure 3D as the GF4TI4200, only pulling away when DX9 or AA+AF become involved. IMHO buy a 4200 now, it will hardly devalue and allow you to buy (for a realistic price) something of 9700 speed in 6 months (or so). A 4200 with 64MB is WAY better than a Rad9200 or FX5200 with 128MB or even 256MB of RAM ... don't be fooled.
