    X800XL or X850 Pro ??

AFAIK, the two seems to have similar performance (stock), but the X850 Pro got only 12 pipes. Is that going to affect performance much, despite the higher clock. One of my friend got a OEM ATI X850Pro for 200 quids, should I take it or spend ~20 more and go with the X800XL.

If you look at the comparative testing on HEXUS, you can see the kind of frame rates that you can expect from the various cards at 1600x1200 with the quality turned right up in Half Life 2 (note that because Rys has a 'great' sense of humour and wants to make us all work a little harder - the 6800GT and X850 Pro were running at 16xAF while the rest were running 8xAF):-

    6800GT.......56
    X850 Pro.....60
    X800XL.......73
    X850 XT......88
    X850 XT PE..91

If you look at a range of comparative scores for the games that you are interested in - then find the best price possible from your favourite manufacturer - you can divide performance by price to see how much 'bang-per-buck' you are achieving with each card + have a look at the bundle and after sales offer

Once you have all that info (performance - price - value)...

...you can make the right choice

They're pretty close but i prefer a card with more pipes and lower clock over a card with fewer pipes and a higher clock.
