    Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 OC

    Hi Everyone,

Looking to get a proper GPU for my machine - inherited from work, it has an older workstation GPU (AMD Radeon with 1GB VRAM) which was necessary for its former tasks. CPU is reasonable, I think - i7 3960x. I'm not looking for hardcore gaming, but it'd be nice to dabble. Is the GTX 1660 OC 6GB still a valid choice?

Edit to add: Board and CPU only support PCIE 2.0. Anyone have any ideas how much that'll choke a modern GPU?

    Thanks!

I would check the PSU. Online wattage calculator and whether you have the pcie power cables you need.

Pcie speed does make a difference 2 vs 3 on a 2080ti. Worth reading the conclusion maybe. Not sure if it will effect a 1660.

I would pay a bit extra for the GTX1660 Super.

Thanks, I'll give that a read. PSU has plenty of grunt and the required connections. The box was a testbed to see how effective a pimped out consumer grade CPU would work compared to our usual Xeon-based workstations, so aside from the GPU, it was a nice piece of kit when it was originally commissioned (eg, RAID0 SSDs, watercooled CPU block).

Re: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 OC

Non-super nvidia GPUs are a bad choice these days (other than if you find a cheap 2060). A 1650 super isn't that much slower, but is a whole lot cheaper. Avoid the AMD 5500XT, the PCIe 4.0 8x connection will not get on well with a PCIe 2.0 board (it'll run, but what a bottleneck! Low end nvidia GPUs tend to have a full 16x)

I would definitely echo the sentiments for the SUPER. But It's worth having a quick browse around to see if you can snap up a cheap 1070ti / 1080 from anyone lucky enough to have scooped at 3000 series card.

Re: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 OC

RX 5500 XT 8Gb can be purchased new for £175, cheapested GTX 1660 Super 6Gb I can see is £208. Both are decent cards.

Reasons for GTX 1660 Super 6Gb:
Generally better performance on aggregate (although it is title dependent so do some research)
    Better video encoder NVEC

    Reasons for 5500XT 8Gb:
    More vRAM
    Cheaper
Likely to age better in terms of driver support
Lower power consumption (around 90-100W, compared to the 1660 Super's ~120W). Average load when gaming. Sources:

    https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/revi...per-sc-ultra/4

Although power draw from partner models will vary, so the power difference is potentially smaller, depending on which models you compare, and 20W is a small bump in any case.
