You could definitely look at one of these... http://komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=304723&cks=PRL

But if you wanted more performance for less money - then you might want to consider one of these as well... http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=306372&cks=SER

I am sure that AdamF will give you different advice but - as far as I can make out - the X800XL is a 'killer product' that offers an amazing amount of power for the money and - using almost any measurement system you want - it packs more 'bang-per-buck' than anything else out there

What we really need is an X800XL mini-group test so that HEXUS readers know which one to go for...

...and Rys could also include some 6800GT action in there for good measure/balance etc

Come on lads - it's impartial buying advice that's needed here !

    I'd go for a 6600GT.

90% of the power of the fastest chips at 30% of the price.

    Very good value.

There are two ways to satisfy the AGP & PCI-Express market for graphics chips

    1) You have two production lines and two different designs
You produce AGP on one side and PCI-Express on the other
Now you have stock of both chips
You hope that you guessed the production levels for both chips correctly !

    2) You design only high-end PCI-Express chips that will work on the faster interface
You have a second product called 'Rialto'
You produce enough graphics chips for both the AGP & PCI-Expres markets
Your board parters buy these chips and decide for themselves what the split is between AGP and PCI-Express
They can then get Rialto chips for any AGP cards that they want to make
This is a much more flexible system !
Our partners will have AGP versions of all these cards in the stores any time now - so please don't think you are limited on choice

personally i wouldnt bother with a 6600GT over a 9800pro. I wouldnt go anything less than a 6800GT tbh, otherwise its a huge shell out for little gain.

my recommendation would be a 6800GT or an X800XL, although i do prefere Nvidia (even though i have an X800 )

X800 .....all the way. Drivers work well, they are updated every month...I love my X800 Pro and I had a Rad9800 Pro like you did before.

Its massively noticable in power increase terms.

May I ask, what performance gains would there be from a 6800GT to a X800XL?

Is the PCI-E 6800GT better than the AGP 6800GT as I have the AGP?

    alexander,

you wont see any real performance benefit of PCI-E over AGP with the same cards since no games are yet able to demand enough data to/from system memory to the card to bottleneck at the AGP bus.

    [DW]cougho,

my mate has basically the same rig as me except he has a 6600GT and i have the 9800Pro. his 6600GT cost him £120 and he gets solidly better performance than i do in most games (sorry Andrzej!) so that's hardly a waste of cash...

That said, I'm planning getting an AGP X800 XL, Scan have them in stock now as do Savastore. They're what I'm putting in the next few gaming rigs for clients just now and recommending to anyone who asks!

    Never apologise !

Faster is faster - there is no 2 ways to look at it

You will never see me shy away from spotlighting our own successes - or dealing with the tough questions from customers when we don't win

In this instance, our response is clear - the X800 and X800XL for AGP will provide stiff competition in this market

Also the x800pro performs worse than the the x800xl yet costs more. There is no reason to buy the x800pro (12 pipes) vs x800xl (16 pipes) as the extra pipes make up for the small difference in vpu clock and memory speed.

actually yep your right, i dont upgrade often so i tend to generalise that everyone is like me. The 6600GT is a fair bit faster but isnt that much of a performance increase that it would justify me upgrading to it.

hell i know someone who went:
    9800pro - 6600GT - 6800nu (16,6) - X800pro

and hes happy, personally i think its madness.

and sorry mr ATi, please dont send an exe to my pc ordering my X800 to blow up
