Can I replace my mobile 6200 Turbo cache for go 6800 and where can I get one?

    Hi,
I have recently purchased a Sony Vaio VGN-FS195XP Pentium Mobile 740 1.73 GHz Laptop.
It has a 6200 TurboCache GFX installed which I presume isn't onboard.
Therefore I would like to change it to a Go6800 range maybe an ultra.
Does anyone know if this is possible and where can I purchase the GFX card from?
Some may say I should of bought the Dell laptop with card already in but it wasn't my cup of tea

    Cheers

Laptops generally aren't built to swap the graphics card. That means whatever card it is, it's integrated into the motherboard. In essence it's not an onboard card, but the fact that it's physically connected to the motherboard (Not via an AGP or PCI-e slot like on desktops) means you can't change it.

The only way to replace it is with a near complete swap of the laptops internal parts. On the basis you also can't buy internal components for laptops (Or at least not easily) it seems likely you're stuck with it.

Just to further muddy the waters, there is a new breed of laptops which can have changeable graphics cards (Using mini-slot connectors), but the Sony isn't one of them as far as I can tell. Sorry.
If the Earth is a sphere how do you travel to the ends of it?

If its an MXM module then this is like a PCI-E slot for laptops which nvidia helped plan and design and is intended to allow the enduser to upgrade the graphics to a more powerful solution. I would check that the graphics is on an MXM module and if its not then there will be no way of upgrading your laptop.

Hope this explains it a little clearer.

Well it looks as though I be able to upgrade my Gfx
According to an article at PCMag

An extract from the article reads "At this year's CES in Las Vegas, nVidia announced its discrete GeForce Go 6200 graphics solution which supports the 915 Express chipset and incorporates the nVidia MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module) technology. With MXM, graphics come in the form of a detachable module, allowing vendors to configure notebooks quickly with faster and better graphics as they become available. The GPU will be available in the Sony VAIO FS and S Series notebooks.

So I just need to find out exacly which mxm module is inside then source one

I'm fairly sure there are also mobility 6200s being built onto laptop system baords, so be sure you actually have an MXM slot. You likely do, your laptop is an FS series.

Also, you should know that a 6800 will probably noticeably shorten battery life. Still, if you play games the trade off would be more than worth it.

    Hi,

Do you know of any way I can find out without taking the laptop to bits
