Also you can't mine on any 3080 Tis now, they all have a 50% hash rate limiter. Well you can but they use more power and less mining capability than a 3060.
Pretty sure it's just first come first served. I tried my luck on quite a few Scan drops earlier this year when I was after a 3080 and eventually got lucky as I had read on Hexus that a drop was due that day, made sure I was already logged into Scan in my browser, and kept my phone right next to me all day so I could react straight away when the stock alert pinged up. I really don't think there's any subterfuge or conspiratorial stuff going on here - just demand massively outstripping supply.

Its mostly botting by miners. This is the impression I get from retailers. Even on OcUK,their £550 RTX3060 GPUs sold out in under 2 minutes today! I even tried on launch day to get one and it was already £400!

Which is pretty much how I got my 3060ti. It was a slightly surreal experience though, I was on the page in seconds and it was getting more and more sluggish as I was putting the order in.

Clicked order, was amazed that it accepted the order. Waited for the cancellation message.

Instead got a payment taken message. Figured it would never ship.

Right until the package was in my hands I didn't actually believe I was going to get a GPU.

It still seems odd that I was thankful for getting a card at FE prices. That is still horribly expensive compared to the £140 I spent on the previous RX570 card which is my normal sort of spending level. It has made a huge difference to my VR games though compared to that old RX570.

I wonder how much demand is because people can't have one.

I tried to find an FE drop but never did find an RTX3060TI FE deal - I regret not getting one launch day at RRP when I had a chance. I stupidly waited to see what AMD had in response, since I wanted a card with a bit more VRAM and better Linux support. Then we ended up with the useless RX6700XT launch with even less availability.

OcUK did another of their forum deals, and they had a RTX3060 at around £450. I almost considered it,then decided to slap myself. The GPU is worse than any of the consoles.

At this point if my GTX1080 goes,my irratic GTX960 will be what I have to use at qHD. Then after that I have an ancient HD7850 1GB which I am not sure actually works anymore.

If that goes and the market has not recovered by then,I suspect I might then sell off my Ryzen 7 rig,and keep the Core i5 10400 rig which is much smaller and has an IGP. Then at that point either get a console for gaming,or sell the secondary rig as well and get a laptop.

No doubt. I wasn't trying to suggest otherwise, just that at least some of these cards do end up in the hands of normal gamers, as evidenced by various forum members including DwU. Admittedly you have to be in the right place at the right time, and need a huge slice of luck too!

Very similar experience here. I was fortunate to be working from home on the day in question, and luckily had just got off a Teams meeting with my boss less than 5 minutes prior to the stock alert. I hit 'Buy now' and fully expected the next page to time out or say item unavailable, but managed to get to checkout and order confirmed. It definitely felt surreal and I remember my heart was racing, which is absurd if you think about it. Buying a sodding GPU shouldn't be that challenging or stressful! Or expensive, for that matter. I agree even the FE prices are crazy really, and the only reason I went with it was because I'd seen that I could get a good price for my 1080Ti on Ebay. That 3.5 year-old card paid for about 70% of the cost of the 3080.

Well I was referring to when I bought my FE card, which was over four months ago. There were most definitely no LHR cards in early February.

That aside, what would be your suggestions to Scan to improve the situation for people trying to buy an FE card in the UK?

LHR means limited hash rate - it's significantly reduced, but still viable. Also, it'll absolutely be circumvented at some point.

The advent of EIP 1559 next month means it is feasible that the cards will still be sought after if a new coin becomes more favourable - LHR measures only work on Ethereum.

Re: 3000 founders edition cards UK

Finally managed to snag a 3090 this morning - the process right now seems completely mad. I didn't *really* need that card, a 3080 would have been fine, but it seems at the moment the rules are either buy anything you can that appears at RRP, or pay a 50%+ premium to scalpers.

I wonder why retailers aren't just offering a first come, first served queue system. Perhaps they worry that the queue would take months (or more) to ever process? But entering a queue in return for a modest deposit (to weed out opportunists) seems preferable to the random mad scramble against bots we have now.

The queue would take ages to clear, like the one scan still has now from launch day for the 3080. Im sure i read somewhere OCUK queues would take two years to clear according to how many cards they get for 3080s. The whole thing is crazy but realistically the best way to get a card now is the fe route from scan, everywhere else is overpriced.

This tbh. And the answer for the most part is greed.

The thing is, only Ethereum is big enough to support all those cards at a profit. All the other coins are just noise in comparison. So if everyone swapped eg from Eth to Raven, they all just pay the electricity cost and get sod all back. Worlds tiniest violins at the ready...

OFC if people really believed in crypto, then they would just sell their GPUs and put the cash into the Enron-esque nonsense that is DeFi. Looks pretty easy to get a 50% apr on an investment on there atm, which I think beats mining and probably with lower risk.

    How do you figure that?

Mining RVN is currently equivalent to about 60% of ETH even with the higher power usage. So, after 1559, it could well be comparable.

Just to be clear, ETH at 60% of CURRENT values would still be profitable so, if you think the massive mining farms will just give up and sell their GPUs, you're kidding yourself.

    Scaling.

Yep Eth is profitable (I'm not gaming right now so my 3060ti is earning its price back, so I'm confident that for now Eth is minable).

The thing is, Eth is profitable when as I type it has a total hashrate of 560TH/s: https://2miners.com/eth-network-hashrate

Compare that with Ravencoin, which is profitable at a rate of 4.3 TH/s: https://2miners.com/rvn-network-hashrate

So when Eth stops being mineable, if everyone swaps to Ravencoin the returns from Ravencoin at 564TH/s will drop by two magnitudes and *that* isn't profitable.

Re: 3000 founders edition cards UK

So I managed to get a 3090 FE a little while back. It's sitting idle for big chunks of the time. Anyone got an idiot's guide to mining for solo setups so I can recoup at least a bit of the outlay?
