Basic used graphics card 1080p, 3-4Gb min really for an 8yr old CPU and 8yr old Kid!

    I'm giving my 7yr old son (for his birthday) my trusty old Asus P8Z77-M pro, 3770k @4.3 (delided), 16gb ddr3 1866. 250gb M.2 NVMe(bios boot mod), 500Gb SSD. 550w 46amp XFX Psu

It's still a little sick system and I put it in a nice little Cheap M Aero cool RGB case, glass panel etc, some Aero cool Blue led fans, I'll add a RGB cpu Cooler Later..... its stock

Now the hard part! A Graphics card!, what hell should I buy?!?!, it needs to be cheap!, mine craft, etc etc.

I would really like something with 3Gb+ but not a powerfull card, just so the textures are good 30fps+ on a 1080p 60hz monitor

Something around the HD 7850 2gb maybe but with more vram?, I'm really not sure on what to get this system on the cheap.

GPUs with less than 4GB of VRAM are apparently not as much in demand from miners. Perhaps look at a secondhand RX470 4GB or GTX1060 3GB??

Prices have gone chuffing mental though even on those lowly cards as people start to realise there is a void to fill.

You're not wrong. Last week I ebayed a 4gb RX480 for £157, approximately £7 more than I bought it for new 6 years ago.

Maybe keep an eye out on eBay for refurbished or Amazon warehouse deals? Picked up a returned RX 580 from Amazon cheaper than a refurb, condition was good. CEX? Or try a wanted post here?

Having looked around for a friend recently I came to the conclusion that the only reasonable options are to buy all-in-one systems right now. Lots of very good value second-hand options on ebay for instance. I would save your system for another use, personally, or buy an all-in-one and swap out the graphics card if you can find a suitable arrangement.

A 2GB card should be fine for Minecraft. My kids used to play it on an R7 360 and R9 285 which were both 2GB cards.

But I think the answer is "whatever the heck you can get hold of". Last card I got was an RX 550 at work, and that was horribly expensive for what it is.

My 5 year olds pc has an 9 290 in which I got for £40 over a year ago, seems these have even gone up on ebay etc.

Funnily his is a clocked 8320 with 16gb 1866mhz ram, he likes the lego games etc and has a 1440p freesync monitor which works great, frame rates seem smooth enough with no tearing etc.

I've seen some 4GB GTX 760's going for £50-£80 on eBay if that helps?

    970's are going for 130+, it's madness!
