Unhappy So my 3090 died and is on the way back to Scan. Let's see how we go..

I was lucky enough to get an order in for a 3090 when they were announced but it's no longer with me I'm afraid. I contacted EVGA direct and they recommended I RMA it locally. I'm more than a little worried of course but Scan advertise good service and have a good relationship with EVGA so let's hope it goes well.

    So what happened?

Basically the card stops my system posting - which I've come to realise was a common fault particularly with those that replace the cooler for watercooling or otherwise remove the stock cooler and replace thermal pads etc. I changed the PSU - no joy. I tried another card - works fine. I tried another PCIE slot - no joy. The card failed to boot in another system.

I've run this card for a few months but had slowly being building up new kit for going back to water - this is one of the primary reasons you choose EVGA - both they and scan advertise that cooler removal and blocking is completly supported "Change your Thermal paste or install another cooler and keep your warranty" (https://www.scan.co.uk/shops/evga/rt...-year-warranty) and EVGA openly talk about this on their own forums. This is mind I'd bought an EK Vector custom block and backplate (i've watercooled maybe 15+ years now and i've done around 10 gpus without hitch). I removed the stock cooler - primarily to check if there was any physical damage - a blown VRM or cap for example (i've had this one happen once before - on air mind). Nothing - all looks good.
At this point I figure I might as well fit the waterblock in some vague hope that the stock cooler is causing some issue - again no joy. It's as dead as a doornail.

So DPD have just picked it up and I now have a bit of paper instead of a GPU. I've written down all that I did and put it in the box for the Scan - I'll keep you posted in the coming days as to how I get on. I'm ESD trained, I've got all the equipment (I work for a company that builds electron microscopes) and this ain't my first rodeo so to speak but aside from one GPU going very loud bang over the years this is just odd. Aside from sounding like an aircraft on takeoff in game it's been great.

Hopefully this story will have a happy ending, good luck! It's nice to have an opening like this rather than people just launching into the rant when things have gone wrong.

Thanks, I don't really see the point in venting - this is nobody's fault at the end of the day and my experience may prove interesting to others. These things do happen but GOD I NEED A GAMING PC working again

I painfully aware of the GPU shortage - I spent 3 months waiting for this card to arrive from order date (day 1).

Will be interesting to see how long it takes to get a replacement, I'm just RMA-ing a GTX 1660 Ti to EVGA directly (posting today). Will be interesting to see which comes back first! From my recent expereinces with EVGA direct it's taken around 10-14 days from posting to receiving the replacement, which when you factor in 2/3 days shipping either side I think is pretty decent.

I have always RMA'ed direct to EVGA, they don't bother with checking it or anything, they just send you out a replacement and if you are lucky sometimes its better than what you had!

Scan advertise a 48h turnaround on such products - I'd assume they simply test lightly themselves and then forward it to EVGA.

A heck of a way to test customer service though..

Last time I sent my card to Scan they rejected my fault even though I could recreate it everytime which is why I now deal directly with EVGA. EVGA just sent a new/replacement card. And a better model as well

I guess I can still do that - EVGA did say it was an option. I'm hoping Scan come through tho.

Yup, I'll keep updating this thread - I expect it will get back to scan tomorrow so we should get some progress end of the week...

    So some news!

Scan have tested the card and agree it's faulty - it's now awaiting replacement. Very quick turnaround on their part at this stage but given the crisis what could this mean in terms of a wait?

A good result! I don't know how Scan handle returns, if they take from stock or get a replacement from EVGA.

Re: So my 3090 died and is on the way back to Scan. Let's see how we go..

I had a good experience with Scan RMA where I thought my Vega 56 might be faulty, they tested it 48 hours or so no fault found, which I was happy with and it worked fine. They even paid postage both ways and didn't charge me. That must have cost them money on the card overall, they didn't seem to mind - amazing for such a low margin business.
I have been most happy with Scan of all places in the UK to get computer parts for a long long time now.
    Long may it continue.
