I was lucky enough to get an order in for a 3090 when they were announced but it's no longer with me I'm afraid. I contacted EVGA direct and they recommended I RMA it locally. I'm more than a little worried of course but Scan advertise good service and have a good relationship with EVGA so let's hope it goes well.
So what happened?
Basically the card stops my system posting - which I've come to realise was a common fault particularly with those that replace the cooler for watercooling or otherwise remove the stock cooler and replace thermal pads etc. I changed the PSU - no joy. I tried another card - works fine. I tried another PCIE slot - no joy. The card failed to boot in another system.
I've run this card for a few months but had slowly being building up new kit for going back to water - this is one of the primary reasons you choose EVGA - both they and scan advertise that cooler removal and blocking is completly supported "Change your Thermal paste or install another cooler and keep your warranty" (https://www.scan.co.uk/shops/evga/rt...-year-warranty) and EVGA openly talk about this on their own forums. This is mind I'd bought an EK Vector custom block and backplate (i've watercooled maybe 15+ years now and i've done around 10 gpus without hitch). I removed the stock cooler - primarily to check if there was any physical damage - a blown VRM or cap for example (i've had this one happen once before - on air mind). Nothing - all looks good.
At this point I figure I might as well fit the waterblock in some vague hope that the stock cooler is causing some issue - again no joy. It's as dead as a doornail.
So DPD have just picked it up and I now have a bit of paper instead of a GPU. I've written down all that I did and put it in the box for the Scan - I'll keep you posted in the coming days as to how I get on. I'm ESD trained, I've got all the equipment (I work for a company that builds electron microscopes) and this ain't my first rodeo so to speak but aside from one GPU going very loud bang over the years this is just odd. Aside from sounding like an aircraft on takeoff in game it's been great.
