What graphics card can I upgrade my GTX 1070 to?
I recently refurbished my old PC with more RAM and upgraded the i5-7600K to an i7-7700K (which is the fastest CPU I can install). A summary of my system is:
- CPU: Intel Core i7 7700K
- Motherboard: Gigabyte Z270 HD3P
- Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB
- Graphics card: Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 OC
It runs Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 fairly well at 1080p with reasonably high settings capped at 30FPS. As MSFS 2020 is GPU bound on most systems, I was wondering if I can upgrade the GPU in my system without buying an entirely new system. If so, which new GPU would be the best-for-the-buck in my system?
I do plan to build a new PC next year, so I'm just looking for a stop-gap for the GPU, if it'll make an improvement to my current GTX 1070.
Re: What graphics card can I upgrade my GTX 1070 to?
Given the prices you'll pay for a capable GPU, you'd probably be better off buying a pre-built and parting out or selling your rig as a whole.
There have been a couple of systems on HUKD with a 3060Ti paired with either a Ryzen 5 3600 or i5 10400 for £900 to £975.

What monitor do you have?
Re: What graphics card can I upgrade my GTX 1070 to?
Resolution seems to matter a lot here, but a 3060ti seems a reasonable upgrade if you can find one.

It's a 32" curved Samsung G5 of some sort. Link here: https://www.samsung.com/uk/monitors/...c32g55tqwrxxu/
Specs from the site:
Screen: 2560x1440 Resolution, Curved 1000R, HDR10, VA Panel
Technology: 1MS Response Time, 144Hz Refresh Rate, FreeSync™
Connections: HDMI, Display Port, Headphone
Re: What graphics card can I upgrade my GTX 1070 to?
1440P @ 144Hz and MFS 2020 is probably not doable, but the obvious thing is to camp out for an FE card.
Think you need Telegram and join the group, then you might have a few seconds to add one to your basket. (So you obviously need a Scan account preferably with a CC saved etc. - maybe have the login details saved on your phone?)
Unsure how texture intense MFS 2020 is, but while the 3060 Ti is nearly twice as fast as your 1070 it still only has 8GB. The 3080 suffers similarly: it's nearly three times as fast as your 1070 but only has 10GB. While AMD were more generous with VRAM, after Brexit DigitalRiver still haven't organised selling to the UK so no reference AMD cards in the UK.

You can still mine Ethereum, and the value of Eth is still going up, so miners still want cards.

One day I will try to understand what all this mining thing is all about. I've heard vague references to it over the last couple of years.

Ok cool, so to max that out you'd want a decent card, just checking you weren't running an old 1920x1080@60Hz thing that would have made little difference if you had bought a 3090 and wondered why there wasn't a huge leap lol

@Taz Imagine something where a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish ton of energy is burn to produce some numbers that people hold in great value.

I see. Definitely not for me then! I'm trying to reduce my energy consumption at the moment. I'm becoming quite conscious of my gas and electricity bills and the predicted steep rises over the next year.

If you want to electrically heat a room, you get back in crypto currency more than the cost of the electricity used.

Its not like the currencies and financial systems of EVERY nation on the planet rely on the same belief of worth for those systems to operate, is it?

That is true, but my little oil-filled radiator has some advantages:
- it's is silent whereas a bunch of GPUs mining would be more like a really bad fan heater.
- I can switch it on and off without having to shut it down
- and adjust it's output at will without having to remote into the box to change the hashrates etc.
Plus 2000W (mostly in bursts, so maybe if running 24/7, 1000W would do) is still around £2000+ in GPUs.

True, my garage heater is only about 300W from a couple of cards, but then I'm only trying to keep the car comfortably above freezing point. The fan noise isn't too bad though if you have decent graphics cards, certainly a nicer noise than the fan heater we have.
Re: What graphics card can I upgrade my GTX 1070 to?
If it was me I would get a good used 1080ti, mainly because they were so amazing and currently crypto miners don't really want them due to energy costs and heat... A 1080ti is a great card for that spec until you do a full pc upgrade... Send some messages on FB or ask people on Ebay what there best price is
