I've come across a lot of people saying that they use 1280 x 960 because it's squarer, as opposed to 1280 x 1024. The thing is, the numbers don't hold up to inspection. Simply (suck this egg, Grandma) squarer resolutions would give you a number closer to 1 when you divide them...
D'oh! Ive just realised why. It's nothing to do with square. 4:3 screens give you 1.33 (recurring), as do 1280 x 960 resolutions.:D:D
It still looks weird to me, but I'll give it a try.
1280x960 will give you square pixels on a 4:3 montior.
I use 1280x1024 as mine's a 5:4 TFT. ;p
on a tft, ALWAYS use the resolution on the box. anything else will look like ass

I use 1280x1024 for my desktop, but if I have to chose between 1280x1024 and 1280x960 for games I useually go with the latter. It looks more correct, aspect ratio wise.
However, I play the vast majority of games at 1600x1200 or higher.
19" Dimond pro 920 CRT. Use 1200 x 1600 for desktop and 1024 x 1280 in games. 1280 x 960 alwase looked crap to me... Plus i just like a higer res.
I use 1600x1200 on my CRT and now 1280x1024 on my lovely new Iiyama 435S-B 19" TFT :)
