I just got a 9700 pro from rektek, took the shim off for better contact to the gpu and now the fan intermittently makes a very loud noise. It is usually solved by turning the computer off and then back on again. Is this typical with these or does it mean its on its way out?
It sounds like the fan is on its way out. Get a new fan or a passive heatsink for total silence!:)
Passive heatsink? Is there one good enough to cool this card?
My Radeon 9800 Asus does this also, it does it intermittantly however it was enough to bug the hell out of me. Its got 2 fans, and 1 was on its way out, so I unplugged the dodgy fan and screwed a case fan to the heatsink on the GPU. Its just a temp solution until I get a more permanent fixture, however it works fine and the GFX is not overheating. Also when I took my card out, I noticed there were copious amounts of dust inside the workings of the fan, which may have led to its failure.

hmmm yea I forgot about arctic coolers, they are really great - coolness and silence!
I took the shim off with a sharp craft knife, started at the corner and then worked slowly all around it gently prising the shim off. Was very easy to do but I am not sure if it was worth it, only managed an extra 10mhz clock.Quote:
