    Sapphire X800XL AGP any good?

We've been hearing about these X800XL AGP cards with the Rialto chip on them from ATi supposedly coming out soon. Since Andrzej announced them on here I've seen the Sapphire card available at www.scan.co.uk and www.microdirect.co.uk amongst others but what I want to know is, is that an example of what Andrzej was talking about or is it some bodged together effort that Sapphire have done with some other PCI-E to AGP bridge?

I want to upgrade from my 9800 Pro ASAP but i'm wondering if that card is the real deal or if i should wait a bit longer...

That board uses RIALTO. I've just finished an article that shows RIALTO doesn't hurt performance, compared to ATI's latest native AGP GPUs. And given that the X800 XL is such a performance bargain, it's highly recommended by me.

I took a look at Club3D's board. I can't see the Sapphire listed at Scan, but for the price I can see it selling for at MicroDirect, it looks to be great value. Highly recommended.

Hopefully we can publish my look at AGP X800 XL and AGP X850 XT PE very soon.

    ^^^ that one

as i understand it the X800 XL is a native PCI-E chip anyway so will always use Rialto. I just wondered if this was an early example of what Andrzej was talking about or if it was something Sapphire had cooked up themselves...

Thanks for the info Rys, think I'll get my switch card out and order one now

For £230, you can't go wrong for an X800 XL on AGP. Enjoy the awesome performance

X800 XL is the best bang for the buck, especially if you are not using the fastest CPUs in the world. In tests I've done with the X850 XT and X800 XL there is little difference between them on systems with a 2400MHz A64 or slower because the CPU limits performance. Now if you're running an FX-55 at 2900MHz+ or a Winchester or P4EE heavily overclocked it's another story completely.

ok i got it, installed it in the machine (after removing the existing 9800 pro drivers and doing a thorough DriverClean sweep), installed the latest Catalyst 5.4 with the CCC from ati.com, rebooted and it doesn't think the drivers are installed. I get the "Add New Hardware" wizard thing and the windows display is obviously still running in generic mode, not even any 2D accelleration.

The drivers on the CD that came with the card say Catalyst 5.1. Should I be using these drivers instead of the latest ones from ati.com?

    TIA

Try installing those first. If you still have problems remove the drivers again and reinstall your motherboard AGP driver (GART), DX9.0c and then the Cat 5.1's from the CD.

You can make the limiting factor the video card on any reasonably quick system with enough AA, AF, and resolution.

My video card, with this OC, is most definalty faster than a stock X800XL, and I am very video card limited with my 2.53Ghz S754 A64.

Really? Post your compare please. Here's mine at 2399MHz:

    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8540219

    And here's the #1 X850 XT PE at 2400MHz:

    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8520194

Same CPU speed, memory speed, chipsets, etc...

    My X800 XL clocks = 441/540
    His X850 XT PE clocks = 540/590

So you see it's hard to justify a more expensive card if you are running a system slower than a 2600MHz A64 (which is most systems).

Obviously you are going to be CPU limited at 1024x768, no aa, no af. The stock 3dmark 2001 test is hardly representative of how most people play actual games (if they have a decent system).

Run it again at 1600x1200 4x (or 6x) AA, 16x AF then compare them. The X850Xt will be faster. Won't be worth the extra money but it will be faster even on systems significantly slower than a 2.4Ghz A64.

Also 3dmark 2001 is not a very good way to cmpaire ATI and NVIDIA cards. My 9800pro in this system produces better 3dmark 2001 scores than my 6800GT, with the default test. My 9800pro is slower in every game, obviously.

Fair enough on most of your points, but all I'm really saying is wasting money on an expensive videocard is silly, and all but the very fastest systems are CPU limited if you are using an X850 XT PE. The cost is justifiable ONLY if you are running a P4EE 3.73 GHz or FX-55 overclocked (or equivalent). Otherwise the midrange cards are the way to go. The XL does have 16 pipes. The only reason the Pro is slightly faster is because of it's higher clock. If you go to ATI's site and look at the features side by side you'll realize what a great bargain the X800XL is.

I fully realise that the price performance ratio of an X800XL is much better than that of the very high end cards. Also, I think a X850XT or 6800Ultra Extreme is a waste of money regardless of how fast the rest of your computer is, unless you have piles of cash lying around.

My only point is: With the right settings you can be GPU limited even with the fastest GPU and a midrange CPU.

k i pulled the 5.4 from ati.com out with DriverClearner pro again, stuck on the 5.1 from the Sapphire CD and booted - bingo, working video card.

What puzzled me is why these 5.1's that came with the card work, whereas the 5.4 from ati.com doesn't. Has Sapphire hacked the 5.1's to work with the X800XL? If that's the case then I guess ATi aren't yet officially supporting their own spangly new GPU yet!

Andrzej? Can you comment on Catalyst support for X800 XL please?

It was your recommendation I bought this thing on anyway! But even with these wierd drivers it is a nice card, noticable kick up in performance from my stock 9800 Pro.

I think it's something Sapphire does. I've had issues with Sapphire cards before where only the driver supplied with the card would work. Has something to do with the install program I think. Now that everything is properly identified and installed you may be able to upgrade to the newer Cats without issue.
