Shown in pic, this little bit just broke off.
The little circular thing shown in the pic. What does it do, and will my card still work properly without it?

Theres a similar thread here. This may help
Good luck in fixing it. How did you do it by the way?
OUCH!
Could be a capacitor?
Does it just have 2 legs?
Maybe it can be soldered back, or even wirewrapped in place.
Did it break off or explode? If it exploded you could get a warranty replacement (cough).

The little barrel shaped things are capacitors. They're easy enough to replace; the card may well work without it (possibly with a reduced overclock). No harm in trying it.
Should be able to find it here. Find out the number printed on the capacitor, and use the Farnell search to find it. Theyre usally less than a quid
ATI has had a problem with these caps on X800s. I had an X800XL shipped to me (an ATI BBA) that had the same cap just hanging off the board. The card still worked though. It is the one in this compare, so I don't think it bothered the overclocking potential:

I'd RMA it back to ATI. If they feel you broke it off you may have to pay something, but I'm sure they'll fix it right up. They are a good bunch!

I was just putting the card in the socket and it sort of fell off. The card seems to be working okay still, at the same overclock i had before too, but ive backed it off a bit before i have a proper session to see whats up.
thanks for the replies guys
In the future don't hold the card by the capacitators.
Shouldn't be terribly hard to repalce. Just get a new capacitor of the same voltage, capacity, and quality, then find some oen who can solder. Of course if it works fine as is you don't need to do anything.
RMA it if it's new. Sounds like you were fitting it for the first time. I personally wouldn't like to invalidate my warranty on a £300 plus card.

yeah if its new RMA it now, asap - The capacitors are there for a reason, probably to help smooth out the electricity flowing round the card but i dont have a spec handy for ATIs cards
If you cant/dont want to RMA it and it is the capactior thats blown then its very easy to fix, get a new one from somewhere like RS components (cheaper than farnell iirc), will cost you a couple of pence - or goto maplins if you have one near you - and then find someone who can solder.
You can't just leave it off!! LOL
It's on there for a reason - get it sent back asap!!

It's there to filter the power so that the core/memory gets a stable voltage. You certainly can just leave it off as Derth has discovered; it may or may not make the card more prone to crashes.
Indeed, its used in a sub-circuit called an RC-Filter. Ive just finished a 3000 word essay on em.Originally Posted by Rave
